Looking for a new keyboard
« on: Sun, 29 May 2011, 09:05:50 »
Hello =]
Lately I've been looking for a keyboard, the truth is I have no idea which direction to take.

I need a mechanical keyboard, feel and hear that its buttons are massive.
Kind of "clicky" and fun.

I don't want a keyboard that costs $ 300, I'm looking for a reasonable price, but excellent keyboard.

A few weeks ago a friend borrowed me a keyboard to try "IBM Model-M", it was very fun.
I realized that there is a company that produces similar keyboards, called "Unicomp", but I'm not looking for necessarily the same keyboard, otherwise I would have bought it already ..

I wanted to hear about other keyboards, maybe some others can be better for me.

I read a guide about mechanical keyboards. http://www.overclock.net/keyboards/491752-mechanical-keyboard-guide.html#post6025354

According to the guide, The clicky keyboards are made from:
Cherry MX Blue / White Alps / Buckling Spring.

I don't know if this right?..

I Saw so many keyboards..
Unicomp, HappyHackingKeyboard2, Das and I don't know what to choose..

By the way , HHK2 is good? it looks cool because it little and you can carry her.. XD

Please help me,
Thank you very much.

I am not gamer, I use the keyboard for Programming , Web , Typing Words.
I Use : MacBook5,3 (OSX SnowLeopard + CentOS@KDE) , Sony Vaio(WindowsXP + Ubuntu@KDE);

P.S
My English is not perfect , but I try very hard. :)

hello there and wecome to geekhack,

here are some questions you need to answer to yourself before you buy a board,

are you sure you want a clicky keyboard?

Do you require a number pad?

personally i would suggest to you a PLU-87 with whatever switch you like, its a pretty reasonably priced board that is an absolute pleasure to type on, the only problem is that i think i remember reading it does not work on OSX, so that may be a deal breaker for you.

Maybe a vortex poker if you want a small board you can carry

Anyway, any mechie board you buy, you will love

It seems the vowels on your keyboard aren't working so you need a new one.

For you I would recommend IBM model M

What you mean with: "are you sure you want a clicky keyboard?" ?
The sound doesn't interrupt me. Currently I use generic keyboard on my PC, and it is so uncomfortable, it's SUCKS.
I Am tired of typing! The clicky seems to be easy to type faster. Maybe I wrong..

Can you recommend non-clicky keyboards?

About PLU-87, I didn't know you can custom your board..
What switch can you recommend for me? Can I Get Buckling spring with it?..
Where can I buy it?

By the way - Number pad is not necesseraly..
