New desk AAArrrgggghhhhh!!!
« on: Mon, 06 June 2011, 10:29:31 »
So my wife decided to get me a new desk.  It seems that my old one didn't look good in our new place so the 11 year old desk went out the door while I was at work.  The new desk is quite nice and has a lof of storage to put my crap, but there is one drawback.  It really doesn't have enough room for my full size model M.  I'm finally going to get a tenkeyless to replace/upgrade my current model M. I'll keep my eyes peeled on E-Bay too, but I really hope I don't have to get into a bidding war.  Also, I always seem to lose out on Ebay when things get to the last second. I know how it works, but I just don't win auctions all that much.   I also really hope to find one it has already been bolt modded.  So, if you know of one or have one for sale at a reasonable price, please contact me.

Wait, what?   She bought you a new *smaller* desk?  Take it back and get a bigger one you like.  Since she didn't say anything you don't have to either.

I used to have a nasty grey steel desk (thanks dad) wasn't very big but it was adequate at the time.  While strolling through Costco with my GF we saw a nice flat-pack unit.  It was quite deep (I had 2x 22" CRTs, so that was necessary) and somewhere over 6 foot long.  I happened to mention that I thought it was quite nice and I hoped it'd be an item Costco continued to stock so I could get one when I could afford it.  A couple months later we are there again and notice that stock is dwindling quite a lot.  Another month on and they are all gone, never to be seen again.

A few months after that came Christmas.  I unwrapped a totally unexpected desk from Costco that day.  That GF is now my wife and she has never gotten rid of anything without discussing it and has been rather supportive of all my hobbies, including the keyboards.  I still have and use the desk she bought me and it's still just as awesome a desk.  She's redecorated around it twice with no issues.  Our 10th anniversary is coming up so it must be close to 11 years old.

Have you think of a good fullsize keyboard tray?

The "good" ones are easily more expensive than a keyboard but you can probably find a used one in good shape for not that much.

And you can never go wrong with Herman Miller

At 15$ you better hurry because I may buy it for myself. LoL what a deal.

There are two for sale right now in the Geekhack classifieds, no bidding necessary, and for a decent price in my opinion:

If they don't sell by this weekend I'll probably buy them myself.

I was about to mention his too. I hate that he's having such a difficult time selling them.

Weird scribbling on the case is why.  Reminds me of middle school carving my wooden desk.

Shipping from Malaysia doesn't help.

But for U.S. customers, the shipping is probably only about $25 over a board purchased in the U.S.  $175 for a SSK in the U.S. is pretty good.  That's about the price the one sold for last week without any keycaps.

I personally would never even see the markings on the side unless I specifically looked there.  I view my keyboard head on.  Well, for that matter, I actually rarely even look at the keyboard from any angle being I'm a touch typist.  But regardless if the markings were on the top, then it would be a big negative.  On the side, if it bothered me I guess I'd just cover it over.

Anyways, like I said, I'll probably be purchasing these two, so if anyone wants one or both you'd better act soon, within the next couple of days.  I've got plenty already so don't mind giving a chance first to let someone else get them that really wants a SSK.  I guess though the people that always complain they're never going to get one are just to cheap to pay even this for one.

I guess so. The only reason I don't is because I have no actual interest in owning one. Otherwise I'd have gotten one of those, since they really are pretty cheap.

The desk is nice, and much bigger than my old one.  The only bad thing is that the keyboard tray is smaller.  Getting a tenkeyless board will work great and give me room for my mouse again.  Other than the keyboard drawer, I do like the desk.  It gives me a lot more room to hide my mess, (I mean collection of miscelaneous items of unusual distinction.)

I already made that recommendation... Didn't get a word of it, I guess the OP is not interrested in it. (Maybe the surface under the desk is too small for a larger tray)

Sorry, I actually haven't seen much of my computer lately.  All of these are great ideas.  I am definitely thankful for all your responses.   This desk is kind of wierd.  It actually has a keyboard shelf that is compleley boxed inand has a flip up front to hide the keyboard.  I am thinking about removing the enclosure and leaving the front flip up "door" attached.  If I do that I can gain an extra 3 to 4 inches to the sides.  .  That should make enough room to keep my mouse next to the keyboard without affecting the operation of the shelf.  I just have tp move the latch so it will close and latch at the top instead of the sides.  If not, the idea of a smaller table or something to replace the keyboard drawer sounds good too.  It will still be a bit tight, but I think it would work.  I srill want to get a tenkeyless model M though.  Maybe even a Unicomp.

Thanks again everybody.

I was going to suggest that you build your own (just a piece of wood and some sliders), but it looks like the desk pictured doesn't really have enough space...

...or you could sidestep the problem and buy a nice tenkeyless board ^_^

That's what I was saying. ;-)  I want to see if I could find a tenkeyless model M.  That would definitely make all the difference.  I am going to take the sides off the drawer too.  That will give me a few more inches.  I think that may work out too.  I haven't been able to find a decent one on EBay though.  I was hoping that maybe someone here might have one too.  I'll keep looking in either case.  I was also thinking of getting a Unicomp tenkeyless, but they've been out of stock for some time.  I wonder if they will ever carry them again.

Ther is anothe roption too.  I was also thinking about making some kind of estended mouse pad tray.  Hmmm...

My last tray had the mouse pad on a swivel. It was hiding under the tray when in "storage mode". If I remember right, my boss had to cash about 300$ for the tray :-)
If not mistaken it might have been a Herman Miller.

Oh... Here it is. HM Kbd tray with swivel mouse pad

If you are good with your hands, you can make yourself a scooter tray :-)
