Fake browns, and stories of spilled drinks.
« on: Mon, 20 June 2011, 15:14:17 »
I spilled a surgery drink on my Filco with Blues. Bah. Cleaned it as best as I could without opening it up, and am using it again.

A couple of my keys stopped clicking, and feel quite different. I'm thinking a bit of liquid got into the switch, dried into a syrup and glued together the two halves of the jumping bean mechanism. My first thought was not "how the hell do I clean these", but rather: "do MX Browns feel like this?"

Browns and Reds are the only cherry switches I haven't tried, and I'm trying to resist buying a keyboard just to try them. The faulty keys  feel sort of like Blues, but less crisp. The bump is very subtle. It seems to match what I have heard about Browns, and I am so very curious as to what they feel like.

(This post sounds like I'm a teenager asking what boobs feel like)

And to answer your question I doubt it.  The profiles end up being different.

No, Blue is much different from Brown. Sky is blue, but if you drop some rain into sky, it will not became Brown :-)

Technically you feel the bump of Blue before actuation point, so the resistance is very clear. In Brown, you feel the bump at the same time when you reach actuation point (check the wiki for pictures of this) + less resisting force, so the resistance is less felt.

So I say you've discovered a special kind of Blue switches, named spilled Blue :-)

What's a "Surgery Drink"?

2 Parts raspberry juice
3 Parts Simply Limeade
5 Parts Smirnoff

We call it a "Pink Steven" in Puerto Rico.

Must be the fabled Cherry Pink. Some say it is similar to touching woman flesh.

Didn't we just have a "state of Geekhack" thread? Good to see the level of conversation is being raised.

Sounds like a nice frou frou drink. I'll give it a try, substituting the Smirnoff for Russian Standard Imperia.

Fruity drinks are a great peacocking technique; girls love to come up and ask if they can try some of what you're drinking. At which point, the vodka kicks in.

I squirted some water into the switches. We'll see how they sound tomorrow morning. I seem to recall that you need to de-solder the switches on Filcos to take them apart... I pray that won't be necessary.

Damn, some of the other switches have stopped clicking as well. This is turning into a much more serious problem than my original post's flippant tone suggested...

I'm going to have to work on a cleaning process for Filco switches. There seems to be a lack of information on cleaning cherry switches, so I'm just going to have to blaze a trail. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ask for Vodka, neat.

I'd tell you to try DeOxit first but everybody ignores that advice and tries the weird stuff.

Which DeoXit variant is best for keyboard switches ?  Do you just remove keycaps, push the stem down, and spray around?

What about Deoxit residue on the switch contacts after the stuff dries ?  Could it cause problems?

Ok, I guess if you've tried it multiple times on a keyboard and haven't seen an issue, it should be good. Thanks for the help !

The good news is the RustOmeter is taking MUCH longer than I expected to show any signs of switch rusting.  Cherry Corp must make an attempt to rustproof their switches.

They are stainless steel :bump2:

Fixed. I ended up having to desolder the switches and clean them out with some electrical contact cleaner. The lesson is: don't spill **** on your Filco, it sucks to fix.
