Checkered Black and White Keyboard
« on: Tue, 21 June 2011, 23:58:20 »
I have enough keycaps that I could do a checkered layout, but I am not sure what the best way to do it, or if it would look okay.  I searched here, but didn't find anything close.  Has anyone seen any picture of keyboards with checkered black and white keycaps?  Or any kind of black and white mix?  Thanks.

Only one I can think of off the top of my head (probably since I watch a lot of GSL) is the one used by the StarCraft 2 progamer "MarineKing Prime.WE". Not sure if there's any real clean shots of just his 'board but he's used it for a while now and it looks alright. I have no idea what type of 'board it is, just that it's white with white/black checkered keycaps.

Google says it might be an "Owltech" brand 'board.

Right, you reminded me where I got the idea.  It was from watching GSL.  Thanks for the tip.  Found this: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/sys/2427695946.html

It is not exactly checkered though.

Yeah, that's definitely the one he uses. I did find that Owltech people were talking about (or one of them):

MarineKing.Prime acutally uses a Qsenn DT-35 he bought a white one and black one and swapped out keys to get the checkered pattern.

I think MKP stole Jangbi's keyboard 8P He was the first that I recall doing this. Does Jangbi even play on Samsung Kahn anymore?

This is what you need to produce with your black and white keycaps ;)

MarineKing actually stole it from Artosis who stolen the idea from Jangbi. :P

The keyboard MarineKing uses is a QSenn/Samsung DT-35. As do most Korean RTS gamers.

I attached the link to the keyboard I bought from Tempy back in February.  It's the beige one I have.  Very awesome in person, but the off keycaps do bug me sometimes since I have OCD.

I've been looking for Filco 104 beige non-chinese keycaps or black chinese keycaps to complete the look, so let me know if you have some.

I swear I've seen this in other players in the GSL, not sure which ones.  I seem to remember a black/white pattern looked like it maybe highlighted useful keys...  Although I'm probably just delusional.

You are not mistaken.

Artosis, MarineKingPrime, and SanZenith all use a checkered keyboard.

I'm most envious of Julyzerg's Zowie with red keycaps.

His keyboard is beautiful. ;( Saying that, it isn't that hard to dye your keys.

I don't know if July used dye. I'd be more inclined to think he just bought custom keys from somewhere. But I agree, it does make his keyboard look really sexy whatever he did.

Anyone happen to have a link to an image of July's keyboard?  Or know of a GSL match in which it is visible on camera?

Chobopants: Such a clean look. :)

I really like the checkerboard looks, they are loud, classless, and garish. Just like me.

Yeah I find the checkerboard looks a little garish but nothing against people who dig it :). I was actually going to keep the backspace black but the stems were so loose it was really tough getting the key in and I think I like it this way more now anyway. It adds just a little bit of character, along with the escape key, to keep it from being too symmetrical.

Kind of looks like a REALLY fat dinosaur about to eat from a tree.

Checkered is better. Looking at some of my keyboards, I pick the checkered one every time :-) Except when I practice the QWERTY layout.
