Help me choose a new laptop!
« on: Wed, 22 June 2011, 19:26:29 »
Requirements:
- 12-14" screen
- Business-class
- SSD
- ~$1k or less

It will mostly be used for travel and business so I don't care about graphics or anything. However I think I'd prefer something with a little more size to it than a notebook. I appreciate any suggestions!

T-t-t-thinkpad.

Or a Dell Latitude.

I think I'll probably go with one of the smaller Latitudes.

Any reason why you're moving from a Thinkpad to a Latitude? You seem pretty happy with your W500.

I have a Latitude E6410 and it's a pretty nice laptop with a great keyboard, sturdy magnesium alloy chassis, and excellent industrial design, though it has some unresolved bugs for me at least. (probably isolated case though - it also was involved in an accident with pancake dough about 2 weeks after I bought it that might have led to some of the issues). I would have preferred a T410 though (IMO T400s and later Thinkpads have better keyboards than this Latitude; T400 and earlier are about on par).

My little observations/advice.
-Go for resolution. 1600x900 if you're getting a 14". One of the biggest regrets on my laptop is going for 1280x800 on my laptop.
-Trackpoint on the Dell Latitudes is usually considered to be worse than Lenovo's implementation. This depends though - I personally prefer Dell's implementation (since I learned Trackpoint on my Dell) since there's a little less wiggle/dead zone on the stick since Dell uses harder plastic on their cap. However Dell's cap is more slippery since the little protrusions are less pronounced.
-Latitudes tend to have worse trackpads. Since the E6400 Dell's been using Alps trackpads and they are inferior to the Synaptics ones on the Thinkpads.
-Note that the new Latitudes have an arguably inferior keyboard layout than the Thinkpads. (6-row instead of 7-row)However, people say that the keyboards on the new ones are fantastic.
-Build wise the two should be about equal, though it might be superior on the new Latitudes. Thinkpads do feel stiffer thanks to the magnesium alloy skeleton, but Dell Latitudes have better finesse since they use magnesium alloy on the exterior (however my Latitude has a wee bit more palmrest flex than the Thinkpads I've tried)
-Thinkpads have rubberized lids. Latitudes don't. YMMV.
-If you aren't using a docking station cover the docking connector with tape or something. It's a big weak spot on the bottom and you could easily inadvertently place the laptop on a wet table or something with a spill. That's what I did with the pancake dough incident.

@Pylon - two things have annoyed me with my Thinkpads:

1. My T61 had the faulty nvidia GPU issue that both Dell and HP fessed up to and made good on but Lenovo never said anything publicly. However, after like a year it started going around the internet that they would fix the isssue outside of warranty and they did.

2. My W500's battery died after only a year :( and my T61's had to be replaced after like 2.5 years.

So, I was wondering if I might have a better experience if I made a change...

Lenovo x220? It's everything you're asking for except for the SSD part. You can add one in yourself though.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/notebooks-desktops-sale/590474-fs-4-brand-new-lenovo-x220-various-configs.html
http://forum.notebookreview.com/computer-components/590603-fs-120gb-ocz-solid-2-series-ssd.html

If you buy the cheapest x220 there and that SSD, it'll be just over $1000.

+1 for X220, X120 if he want to look to a less expensive or more portable machine.

Is always better to add the SSD later. It's way less expensive and retail SSDs are supported better than OEM ones

I was given a Latitude E5410 for work.  It's a decent machine under Win7, and everything worked out-of-the box with Linux except that the $*%*^ Alps trackpad is only recognized in PS/2 mouse compatibility mode and the frigits at Alps won't release the magic information needed to write a proper Linux driver for it.

My only quibble is that it would have been nice to have a digital video out on the bare laptop (rather than needing the docking station) but I guess that in the enterprise market everyone has docking stations and a lot of projectors are still VGA.
Daily drivers are:
Microsoft Natural (the original, and still going strong)
Microsoft Natural Elite

The jump up to the e6410 includes a displayport port on the laptop... It's not bad, but I'm sorely disappointed at dropping screen resolutions.  I liked my 1920x1200 laptop.

Add me to the group that suggests the ThinkPad X series.  I'm writing this from an X61 that I bought used  a few months ago so I would have a truly portable laptop.  While it is a few generations old it still works beautifully.  In my experience, this is the norm for ThinkPads.

Also the new Thinkpad keyboards are different. The feel is nicer IMO (though I don't own a Thinkpad/ haven't used one for an extensive amount of time), but different from older ones.

Nice, you got the IPS screen! And 8GB ram should last you for a while too. How come you didn't go for an "aftermarket" SSD?

I meant why didn't you get the cheapest possible HDD and then buy SSD afterwards to save money? Lenovo website says that a 128GB SSD cost $280??

I might be buying a new thinkpad in the near future (rather than wrestle with my stupid T60p), OR, a macbook. One of the two.

How are you getting on with the X220? I'm looking at upgrading my X200 at the moment; I can't make my mind up between the i7 and i5. Is an i7 a waste in a business laptop such as this?

You will like the more compact size, but on the other hand you will miss the 16/10 display.

The CPU is not so important unless you use the notebook for fatiguing tasks, like compiling SW or transcoding video, the X200 CPU are already more than enough to do anything.

What change the life is a good SSD, if you still haven't one I strongly suggest to upgrade your X200 with an SSD...

...and to spend the remaining money in keyboards, keycaps and so on...

P.S. do you need a brand new UK keyboard for the X200 ? I have a spare one...

I'm still staying away from SSDs for important files. If they die, is it even possible to recover the information out of them? With a magnetic platter, you can always retrieve the stuff off; given that the platters are high quality and not damaged.
Of course SCSI and SAS are more desirable.

I made an image of my Intel 160 GB on the 2 terabyte raid in more or less 6 minutes.

My  statistic, personal but vast, says that I have replaced 5 times more broken scsi/sas than IDE/SATA ones and considering that, obviously, there are more IDE disks than SCSI ones it's really an embarrassing result.

Likely the SCSI chains are the most overhyped things of the whole IT market.

I never once had a hard drive fail on me. Ever.

Still have a bunch of IBM deskstars that work fine (Although the IBM logo looks a bit funky, the stripes aren't symmetrical). I love the sound they make when they power on.

In my experience i noticed that people who used SCSI disk had the data more secured just because almost any SCSI installation had a raid 1.

And to get the thing worse almost alwais when a disk was failed the replacement was not available anymore and the newer disk had a different connector/interface adding one more troubles to troubled situation.

The day when Promise started to sell the IDE raid controller I was the happier person in the world, the day WD started to sell the 10000rpm Sata disks I was even  happier, I still have to see a broken Raptor.

I really like my WD cavair drives. I have my original (IBM warranted) 2GB one, along with a newer 4GB one. They work great.

That's the good thing about my Ultra 320 SCSI drive; not many people have the equipment to get the files off of it. The IDE/SATA drives I get from the dump always have files left on them... people never learn do they?
(I just format them; not interested in what crap people have on their HDDs, probably just PR0N anyways... which I don't care for).

Haha, sometime happen that people who bought an USB drive from a firend or from ebay mess the logical data arrangement, partition, whatever and call me to recover the lost data.

The hard part is not to recover the files, is separate their porn from the ones left by the previous owner, because often they will be recovered together. :smokin:
