Recommend me a tenkeyless (or similar) brown switch board?
« on: Fri, 24 June 2011, 20:38:17 »
So I recently sold my blackwidow and I'm in the market for a new keyboard. First let me start off by saying Filco's are out of the question, too expensive. I'm on a really tight budget.

Keyboards that semi caught my eye are the leopold tenkeyless, which is currently out of stock at EK. The problem with that is that they'll charge me shipping as well as tax, which comes out to about $130. Might as well spend $10 more dollars and get a Filco off of amazon huh.

Another keyboard I was scooping out was the noppoo choc mini. Price would be $110 shipped. The things I really like about this keyboard are the pom cap, which I'm not really sure how they feel but I absolutely love the way they look with their brownish/goldish lettering. I also love the face that it has media keys as well as a number pad in different colors. It gives it a nice touch and isn't as "boring" as other boards. One thing I'm worried about is the layout factor and how the frame seems to sit pretty high compared to other boards.

So any input as well as recommendations would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Sounds like you might want to look at qtan's 'group buy'  Check out 2nd post for pricing...

Cheap PLU 87's if you don't need better than 2KRO.  The Choc Mini is in there too for better than your shipped price, around $98 shipped.

Plu-87 is a good bargain board as far as I can tell it looks to be pretty nice. I almost got one, but went for the Leopold instead. If you want something more compact than the tenkeyless, perhaps the Poker? Theres a few in the classifieds I think with browns for $100 or so shipped.

I could only find a review at that other place. Has no one on this site written one?

Apparently the PLU's are a great board for the price. However, they're only 2KRO, if you do any heavy gaming, that might be an issue. If you're mainly using this board for general computing/typing, it's probably your best bet. Plus, they come in all 4 switch types! (Yummy reds).

Anybody know if the PLU is plate mounted?

I came from a blackwidow to a das and now to a leopold tenkeyless. I love it.

My buddy has a filco and I dont see why they are worth the higher price. I prefer blank keys, the leopold stabilizers, and the detachable cable.

How are leopold's stabilizers? I heard some people having issues with theirs.

Man I would get a white PLU right now if it wasn't 2KRO. I wish it was at least 4KRO.

The Cherry style stabilizers don't really bother me, but they do make those keys feel really different. If you want one now, you might try Leopold Japan. The price would probably end up being fairly close to EK as I believe the boards are cheaper, but higher shipping. Actually it might be cheaper for you since you mentioned tax, and ordering from Japan you wouldn't have that.

Leopold: I don't like the stabilizers.  I'm a picky bastard and the spacebar annoys me a little bit in this respect, although it's not like it's really that bad...just sounds cheaper if I depress it right of center vs left.  Mine don't squeak though, which is a complaint some people have had.

I'm going to swap mine with a friend for one of the newer Duckies, and if we're both happy, we'll permanently switch.  I think Duckies use the cherry stabilizers AND have a standard space bar, so I can replace all the keycaps without needing a special spacebar for the Leo.

So while no one has mentioned it you may want to consider the Ducky 1087.  It looks like PC Home has them for about 1990 NTD or $69 USD plus shipping (they have had $20 worldwide shipping before, don't know what it is currently).  They're supposed to be NKRO, or probably 6KRO over USB.

The Choc Mini's look tantalizing, and it's on my list to eventually get one or a similar model.  You could try making an offer on one of the ebay auctions.  Maybe you could get it for $80 or $85 + $24 shipping.

The stabilizer on the Leopold doesn't feel as nice as the filco, but it doesn't bug me at all.  The ducky seems to have a filco-style stabilizer on the space bar, and cherry stabilizers on the rest of the wide keys.

It would be the cheapest option, if PCHome actually had them in stock with blues or browns- but they're out of English for both.

btw EMS shipping is only 10$ from PCHome, and EMS will get to your door fast.

A little OT but why are some keyboards limited to 2KRO?  Is it an artificially created limitation in software?

Why does everyone make such a big deal about 2KRO?  Nobody has been able to give me a real world example where it would matter yet...

I commonly press 3 keys at a time when playing an FPS, and sometimes 4...2KRO would render a keyboard unusable for me.

You didn't specify which keys. Modifiers don't count.

Certain games for sure need it. For example I dumped my blackwidow because if I had E and tab pressed, I couldn't press F. I use ESDF for gaming so that was a deal beaker.

As for the leo stabilizers, they seem to press more evenly. On filcos, das, etc the switch collapses on one side more. Personal preference. Most people wont care too much either way. I can guarantee if it was the other way around, people wouldnt be raging.
