How do you find out if a board is plate or PCB mounted?

More specifically, how do you find out if a Cherry G80-5000 HAMIT (split mechanical, MX brown) is PCB or plate mounted?

I mean: do you have to open it and see or does one of the "HAMIT" letter give the info or is there some rule like "all boards with a Cherry logo are PCB mounted" or can this be seen by pulling off a few keycaps or ... ?

Not seriously but if it's a reversible mod and if I could easily transform the browns into something more "Model M'ish" without too much risk of breaking anything, then why not :)

But the problem is: I don't think I like the browns that much (I love the split that said) and I'm really not sure I'd appreciate another type of MX switch anyway.

So let say I'm thinking a bit about it without seriously considering it.  At least not yet :)

It's a shame M15s are so damn rare. I'll be honest, I'm super curious about them. Don't know that I'm $500-1000 curious, but I'm definitely curious.

But I think you won't be able to get even close in feel to a buckling spring with any cherry switch. I've tried them all but reds, and while blues are the closest, they still just feel wrong. And weird weird weird.

there are always greens...

I remember seeing pics of a g80-5000 with the caps off, i think they were plate mounted switches. Does anyone have a pic for us here?

You mean first Cherry keyboard.  I've got Model Ms since so long I don't even remember when I bought my first one : )

I pulled 7 keycaps and here's another pic taken with the MacBook Pro's integrated webcam: geez that laptop is not as easy to manipulate as a camera : )

Definitely PCB mounted. You can see the diodes mounted on the PCB.

I hear you... As a lifelong Model M user I wish I had one but the price is a little too steep.  Or I can try to be lucky like with this Cherry MX 5000 that I got for 228 Euros.  Or maybe just sell this Cherry MX 5000 NIB and use the money + a little something to buy a M15.

Terrible thing is: I do like split keyboards (I even own an old rubber dome split Belkin keyboard that I used to use when my gf was asleep as to not bother her too much with the buckling springs).  And that split Cherry MX is surely better than my rubber dome split Belkin but still, I fear that it's like what you're saying:

Then it makes no sense to risk to ruin a NIB highly collectible keyboard just to find out anyway that I don't like the "Cherry-MX-whatever-color-from-the-rainbow-plus-whatever-spring-mod".

I may just re-list the thing.  Don't know.

Anyway I'll start a new thread or PM you one of these days regarding these modifiers settings you're using under both Linux / Windows / OS X and the "super-only desktop shortcuts" that don't interfere with any program.  It makes a lot of sense and I've got questions for you : )   (nice avatar btw, I love cats and that one is great, it surprises me some people don't like that avatar : )

You mean Cherry MX greens, the one that is like a blue but with a  stiffer spring?

The tactile bump on that switch is not larger than the blue but because it has a stiffer spring, you press it harder and that makes the bump less significant.
So it is actually less tactile in practice than the blue

LOL!  If you want something Model M'ish, then by all means get one!

You will not find a Cherry switch which even comes near to a buckling spring switch!

Sell it off for around 1000 EUR and get your ergonomic IBM keyboard instead!

To be fair, it wasn't an Italian sailing under the Spanish flag who was the first European in the Americas, but rather a bunch of Scandanavians, regardless of what you were taught in grade school.

Not to mention Asians had discovered it long prior. Typical western-centric view of history.

So because I live here means I have to wear the same blinders? Some of us care about actual history, and prefer a variety of sources, rather than a single source.

But that has nothing to do with how to tell if a keyboard has plate or PCB mounted Cherry switches though, does it?

This is so not the forum for this discussion. If you can't be sussed to look up history, then I can't really help you. Suffice it to say: descendants of the Asian peoples who found the Americas were here, and the Scandinavians were in the far north, where Columbus didn't go. For that matter, Columbus never set foot on the mainland of North or South America.

To get on-topic: If the OP wants a mod, why not just wait for Round 4 and go for the keycaps mod? That's difficult enough for for the beginner!
