Looking for Cherry Blue non-Tenkeyless keyboard
« on: Sun, 26 June 2011, 10:35:04 »
Hi everyone,

I'm new here and also new to the world of mechanical keyboards. Up till now I've been using membrane 'gaming' style keyboards, but as I've stopped playing games mostly and am doing a fair bit of programming and general typing now, I feel it's time to get out and buy my first mechanical.

The switch: typing has the definite priority, don't care much about gaming performance (I'd only play an RPG very sporadically if I find the time). Kind of like the clicking noise, so I was thinking Cherry MX Blue?

The keyboard: I'm undecided on this one. I guess I'd like to try blank top keycaps, but that's not mandatory. I don't know if I'd prefer ABS or PBT keycaps.

Right now I'm considering:
- Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate
- Filco Ninja Majestouch-2

Any opinions on which one of these two I should get or other suggestions perhaps? I'm kind of looking for a keyboard to last me a good while (as I'm sure these mechanical switches will), and not try out a bunch of different keyboards.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to GeekHack. Both boards are pretty much on par regarding build quality. The Das may get dirty more easily because of the surface though.

Filco Fanbois will disagree.  Also, to the OP, do you want the numpad?

He said "non-tenkeyless" so I think that means no numpad.

OP stated non-tenkeyless, both in the post and in the thread title, so yes, I'm guessing a numpad is desired.

Here's a thread on ABS vs PBT (make sure to click on discussion tab and read through the whole thing).

As for recommendation, since I don't own a Das, it wouldn't be fair for me to voice my opinion... don't wanna be called a fanboy or something. lol

I know lots of folks with a Das, and they all are in love with them. You have to like shiny, though.

I think it's pretty much up to what look the OP prefers at this point.

Hmm, well the Das is quite a bit cheaper and easier to get for me...
I see there are quite a few options for custom keycaps for the Filco, do these work on the Das as well?

Thanks for the help so far!

the filco has ps2 + n-key rollover. Don't think the Das has that (it doesn't have _both_ of those, I mean), but I may be mistaken.

I jumped on a filco majestouch with keypad, blue switches. I would have preferred tenkeyless, but they didn't have it in my favored layout.

I can't tell you if it's worth it compared to the das. I'd get the cheaper one if you never game and looks are a tossup. If you live in europe

then this is where I got mine. You can get a blank set of keys and manually replace each one to get blanks, those are available at the same site.

Yes Das does have N-key rollover.  It does all come down to if the shiny surface bothers you or not.  It does scratch easily and does attract finger prints but that stuff doesn't bother me.  Personally i love my Das keyboard i think that is worth buying.

Yep, Filco and Das are pretty much interchangeable with keycaps.
