Who is interested in purchasing the HHKB?

Hello,

I'm new here, and recently been looking into purchasing a mechanical keyboard for myself to play starcraft 2 and do work on as well.

After doing some research on keyboards, it seems like many people are interested in the Happy Hacker Keyboard from PFU (a Fujitsu company).


Also, any suggestions for a good first time mechanical keyboard that would be good for work (programming) and gaming (sc2)? I'm a little hesitant about the BlackWidow just because of the bad reviews that I've read about the space bar problems.

Welcome to Geekhack and it's Happy Hacking Keyboard (HHKB). =P  Also since you work at Fujitsu, do you get any kind of employee discount?  I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in doing a group buy but we need to know the price and your credentials, feedbacks, etc since this is your first post and all.

Also there are different version of the keyboard.  For example there's a Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2, Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite 2 and so on.  Which one can you get?

I stopped using my HHKB in Starcraft 2 because Esc is right next to 1. I don't know how many units/buildings I cancelled accidentally for this reason.

As  far as I know PFU USA offers only HHKB lite 2. If you can have a nice discount for the HHKB Pro Type-S I may be in. BTW can you get the hand made wrist rests?

This because you are maybe using QWERTY or AZERTY. Try Dvorak instead

I had the same problem with a typing tutor I was using. I would sometimes mi**** Esc instead of 1 and that would cancel the lesson. It was a massive inconvenience. I'm using Colemak, btw. I don't think that it matters what the layout is, as long as Esc is not remapped, which is probably not the case with a standard Dvorak layout.

Also, no offense, but spending months learning a whole different layout just to avoid that issue is a ridiculous suggestion.

I like the HHKB, it's a good concept. But, I don't think I'd get another one because of that and some other layout issues. If it were fully programmable I would definitely change my mind. Oh, for a Miniguru!

I am a programmer and I use USA Programmer Devorak. It may sound ridiculous to you but it is matter of taste I used to type in QWERTY and I changed to Devorak because I am convinces of the benefice.This is just an option. BTW do you own a HHKB?

Erm... I don't think that English is your first language...

I haven't used a Topre switch but I've been told it's a smoother, slightly springy rubber dome.

I've also been told it's like typing on titties. For this reason I can't wait to try them.

I run a Leopold Tenkeyless with Cherry MX Browns and also a Realforce Tenkeyless with all 55gr switches. The Topre switches are definitely smoother than the Cherry switches, but the biggest difference I notice is that my Cherry switches have a little bit of "play" in them, where the Topre keys just feel solid, no rattling or anything. I love them both but there's definitely a big difference. That being said, I can't recommend that anyone drop $220-350 on a Topre keyboard until they've tried one. That can be hard to do, though, so it might be worth it to buy a used one for around $220-240, try it out for a week and if you don't like it you can get your money back by selling it for the same price. And if that's not in your budget, then get the Cherry keyboard that you like best. I love Cherry blue switches for short typing sessions but the browns are more pleasant for all-day typing (like I normally do) so I went with them. Gamers tend to prefer the Cherry blacks and they do have a nice feel to them.

Oh, and welcome to the boards. Enjoy your stay. :)

PS - if you can get some good pricing on HHKB Pro 2 then I'd definitely be interested in a group buy.

As someone else mentioned, this is absurd. Dvorak does not remap 1 or Esc.

More importantly, I used to use Dvorak and then more Colemak. I had to switch back because of Starcraft II because of the way the controls are positional and alphabetical.

The original Dvorak (as opposed to Dvorak simplified which is what you're thinking of) does remap the numbers.
!7531902468= is the number row on Dvorak from 1932
