Help repairing Noppoo Choc Mini cable D:
« on: Fri, 01 July 2011, 22:20:19 »
Hi guys,

Given that this was the place that got me into mechanical keyboards in the first place, I feel it's the appropriate place to seek help with mine.

Basically, a few weeks ago, my keyboard started being unresponsive depending on the angle of the wire.  This got worse and worse until today where it just stopped working completely.  I popped it open and two of the wires seem to be a bit messed up.  I don't THINK it's too difficult to fix, but I also don't want to screw around with things without some opinions.

I know the Choc mini is/was popular here for a while, so any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.  I'm attaching one pic that should explain it all but if you need additional photos of anything, just let me know.  Thanks!

Is that a fan connector?

Anyways, you'll need to re-crimp that pin.

Yeah, it sure does look like a fan connector, doesn't it.  You'll need a crimping tool and just re-crimp it like SecretAgentMan said.

Edit: just saw you're in L.A.  If you're not too far away then maybe I could help you put it together.

this same exact thing happened on my noppoo choc mini. I just completely took out the wiring and converted it to a detachable usb.

i had a type A female to male usb cord laying around so i cut off the male part and stripped the wires. I had to to modify the case and file down the female part to fit comfortably between the switch plate and the casing. I used a dremel for this part. I used new crimps on the wires and put everything back together. Heres how it looks afterwards.

After the fan connector is back on, make sure to fashion some kind of strain relief, e.g. a knot in the cable just inside the casing. With one, this wouldn't have happened.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D
