Steelseries 6Gv2 and rebinding
« on: Tue, 05 July 2011, 05:57:52 »
Hello, 2 days ago i spilled cola into my old Steelseries 6G, and my ESC, tab, Caps Lock, Shift, <, and Left Alt button started to stick like hell, tried cleaning them a bit, but dosent seem to have made a difference

Thinking If i cant fix it, ill need to buy a new keyboard, and since the 6gv2 is the only cheap mechanical keyboard you can really get in denmark, im looking at that, however, The left windows key has been swapped out with some ****ty steel key, which kind of sucks, since i use the windows key alot for shorcuts in windows
Ive googled around for a while now, but cant seem to find any concrete proof wether you can just rebind the Steel key into a normal Windows key, (which would remove the option of using the F1-5 as media keys, which i dont care about), Some site said he couldent cause the Steel key worked like the FN key on laptops, anyone knows?

Thanks

Welcome to Geekhack!

You can't rebind the steel key!
If you are comfortable with soldering, you should take apart that keyboard to clean it, than replace those switches.

Why not use just a wet deoxidizer to clean the affectet switches ?

He have to desolder the switches either way. Then I guess it is better to have new switches.

Well, I dont have any spare switches, but since i never use F9-F12, I could just switch those, and put the wonked out switched into those slots, ill try and open op the housing without soldering first, see if i cant clean the spring and such, hopefully itll work, got some non-conductive, non-corrosive, spray to clean eletronics and some spray to lube up the plastic after which is alos non corrosive and conductive
Anyone know where else to get a cheap Mechanical board in denmark if all fails?, Since the 6gv2 is a major no-go with that useless button (id prefer Blacks or reds, and about same pricerange (6gv2 is 77eu in denmark =o)

No, first try to deoxidize, then, only if deoxidizer doesn't helps, desolder the switches.

well, they dont stick anymore, still works.. but it feels like theres sand in them now when not pressing 100% from the top, sucks you cant remap the steel key to a windows key

Even better, remove the keycap and use the spray to wash it while with the switch pressed, maybe just canned air can help with it's mechanical action.

But the wet contact is the best bet, because does three things in one time, cleans, deoxidizes and lubes.

there's a programm called KeyTweak which allows you to change the bindings of the keyboard, just google it..
Using a Steelseries 6Gv2, atm without any Modifications.

The Steelseries key isn't software based, therefore it is not possible to remap it.

The only way is to hard mod (a damn simple mod if one have used a solder just a couple of times)

Thanks for the replies, i tried desoldering the switches yesterday, but for some obscure reason, they would not come off (even when i removed all the solder), fraid if i used much more force id break something, so soldered it back up, and am going to use it as it is now, till i have enough cash for the Zowie Celeritas Which got MX brown switches, same layout as the 6G, and no derp key, but also almost double the price

Again, thanks for the replies guys :)
