Changing Keycaps of Razer Blackwidow.
« on: Wed, 06 July 2011, 14:00:39 »
Hello.

I was thinking about changing the keycaps on my Blackwidow. I was thinking of changing to a white engraved PBT keycap set, with clear keycaps on WASD, Esc, and arrow keys.

The thing is that I don't know if the KBC PBT keycap set would fit a Blackwidow, and I'm not sure what profile of Clear Keycaps to purchase to make it match (Thinking of buying the clear keycaps at Signature Plastics).

So I was wondering if anyone has changed out keycaps for a Blackwidow and if the PBT keycaps fit, and what profile from SP I should ask for when ordering clear keycaps.

Thank You =)

I'm almost positive the PBT caps from KBC will fit the black widow physically.  The only thing I would be concerned about is whether the stabilizer bars will match up, but I'm sure someone else will come in here and let you know about that.

I have a BW myself and was thinking of doing this same thing.  Only issue is, the macro keys will still be ugly.

Regarding which profile to pick for the clear caps, you just need to get 3 keys of row 2 and 1 key of row 1.  I believe the BW is DCS style on Signature Plastics site.

Bottom row might be an issue - I have doubts that Ctrl, Alt, and Windows will fit. On the imsto caps they're all the same size (~1.3x size of a normal key), which is what Filcos and Ducky's have. On the BW Ctrl and Alt are both larger than Windows (~1.5x) and the Win key is only the size of a normal key.

In other words, the BW would need LCtrl and LAlt as found on old 101/102-key boards. Remember how people used to complain that LWin was in the way for gaming? A setup using MFII-compatible LCtrl, LAlt and Space certainly isn't the worst of ideas. The remaining keys are all 1.0x sized then. I'm not sure who used this first (I'm quite certain it dates back to the mid-'90s), but it has certainly been a while on Siemens/FSC/Fujitsu and Topre boards.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

The macro keys are stupid! They ****ed my hands up because I was used to having my hand at the end of the keyboard so I popped them off and duct-taped over the switches!

Ruggered look! :D

For Ctrl and Alt just get any 1.5x ones from old 101-key boards. Ask around the forum. Plenty of people have them left over since they don't fit the standard Filco/Das/Ducky/whatever boards.
