Question on modding a Cherry G80

Hi,

New in here so please be gentle~

I need some advice on modding G80-18XX series keyboard (USB).  The G81-1800 USB version has a fully programmable chip and has identical layout to the G80, so I was wondering has anyone attempted swapping the chip to make the G80 programmable?

I do hope it can really be as easy as that, cross my fingers ;-)

If both controller ICs have the same kind of case, it's worth a shot at least. Obviously any NKRO-capable board will be down to 3KRO then (or 2KRO if firmware isn't quite as smart).

Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

I love these sorts of questions. Ah, curiosity!

bdpq (typographically awesome name!), give it a try, and let us know how it works.  It would certainly make the G80 that much more useful. Only problem is, you could end up killing both keyboards. But it's in the name of science, so it's totally ok, right? Please?

I just moved from Japan to Canada; the move gave my wife excuse to force me to part ways with many of my old fujitsu and NEC boards with nice omron switches.

Now I can restart my collection with cherry mx! lol!

Yeah, those long distance moves are killer. I have one of those (in mostly the other direction) to look forward to in a few years, if things go according to plan.

Just found a NIB G81-1800LUMUS-0 from this guy. $19!!!  damn that's cheaper than cheap!

I wish. G80-1800s in ANSI seem to be insanely rare in the US. I own 2 that I had to fix up to get working.

There is a new G80-1865 that just came out though. CDW carries it for $95. It has NKRO as well and is in black and has brown switches.
