Which Model M is better?
« on: Thu, 21 July 2011, 20:03:44 »
Hey guys, I have myself two Model Ms and I'm trying to figure out which one to keep. I have a 1391401 and a 58G9658, both made in 93 (I like the blue label). The 1391401 is cosmetically in better condition as the plastic hasn't yellowed as much. Both have the 2-part keys but only the 1391401 has the detachable cable. I plan on bolt modding one and then selling the other. I'm asking mainly to make sure that there isn't anything else that sets one apart from the other. I'd hate to sell the superior one by mistake.

whichever one feels better :)

Personally I've had both and preferred the feel of MY PARTICULAR 1391401...  but from all I've read that may as easily have been production variance or wear differences rather than an intrinsic quality of the two boards.

the '401s are more desirable for whatever reason, for what that's worth.

Of course, I had three Model M's and guess which one disappeared when I moved :(

Yeah I'm sure that all I really needed to hear was which was the more desirable model, but ultimately I will type on both for a little while to see which feels better to me. The 58G9658 is real nice and soft. You hardly feel the tactility of it. The spacebar however is wayy too light. It kind of feels a little flimsy.

How did your Model M disappear?

The one you like is the more desirable one.

RSI prevention recipe:[/B] Kinesis Contoured, Colemak layout, touch typing, Contour Design Rollermouse,  Logitech TrackMan Wheel, Logitech m570 trackball, "workrave" break timer software, "awesome" window manager, tenkeyless boards, cherry browns, Wang 724 with "ghetto green" ALPS, standing desk and/or comfy adjustable chairs, stress reduction, computer time reduction.

Fun non-ergonomic things: bolt modded Model M Space Saving Keyboards with new springs, Kensington Expert Mouse v7, Unicomp Endurapro, Northgates

I had to double check with you guys to ensure that I didn't have absolute s*** taste, haha. In the end, once one of them gets bolt-modded, it'll be clear which is better

I put a bunch of stuff in the back of my friend's Jeep, and when I went to unload it all that was left was the cord :/  I have no idea what happened!  Everything else that I tossed back there all made it to its destination...

I still have the cord...
