Do you guys still look in dumpsters for keyboards, if so where are you going and where are they located normally? While in the hospital not to long ago I notcied the hospital using many AT sytle keyboards and what sounded like a few mechanical ones.

Never seen a dumpster though... If I found it I would have at least taken a peek.

I've never found a good working keyboard in a dumpster, but did once find an old Gateway Intel slot 1 system with a 333mhz Celeron, 96mb ram, and 4gb hdd. I still have it except for the hdd which died about a year after I found it. Good old fireballs... I think I've had more of those die than any other component I've ever come across.

Noticed at a mall once the register had a Model M connected to it! look like it was used for a long time. maybe if I bring in a "new" usb rubber dome they will take it. Im sure they dont want that crummy old keyboard anyway...

Diving into a dumpster near a hospital sounds risky :crutch:

People around here sometimes throw out old computers, haven't seen any keyboards yet.

The only old keyboard I found was a Dell Quietkey, but didn't even look twice at it. Not mechanical, not worth the effort, at least at that time.

If it didn't take me 30 mins to an hour to drive to one of those places, I'd go look. That's too far for me to try without knowing the result. I've tried a bunch of goodwills and whatnot but never found anything.

I asked dealers to find out Compaq MX 11800s and IBM model Ms for me. Lucky they found some, all from computer part dumpsters imported from the US.

There is a dumpster for electronics in the basement of my apartment block, and I go there regularly to look for stuff.
The only half-interesting keyboard that I have found there though, has been a Key Tronic foam-and-foil keyboard: NKRO but feels horrible.

However, I have snagged many other items from dumpsters. For instance, floor boards and furniture parts that I have built a cabinet and a couple of hanging shelves from. Several picture frames, an IKEA Detolf glass case (for displaying my Star Wars helmet collection) and various pieces of plastic, metal, leather and whatnot that I have recycled for arts and crafts (costuming and props). I did most of this years ago when I was unemployed

I grabbed most of my keyboards from an outdoor corporate waste/recycling center thingy. A lot of these old mechanical keyboards were used in large companies, and due to waste disposal regulations they will almost always end up at a proper waste disposal facility rather than a dumpster. I've never found anything terribly interesting in dumpsters. Any electronics thrown out by individuals are often actually broken.

Day 13: buy first mechanical - spazz on GH about first purchase "ZOMG MECHANICAL BEST 4EVER"
Day 20: suffer withdrawal - treatment: buy 2nd and 3rd keyboard
Day 25: Order new keycaps to mod keyboards - rage that you weren't in time for 7bit's group buy

You might be joking, but I would be very careful where you go dumpster diving for used equipment. Labs and hospitals especially, some places are not worth it.
