May sound stupid, but the best type of Topre?
« on: Mon, 08 August 2011, 17:39:53 »
I've been looking at Topre keyboards now, and I've decided that I ****ing love them. Especially their white/light grey tenkeyless varients. Not a fan of tenkey versions of them.

What's everyones favourites? By favourites I don't mean the colours, I mean the model...

I have had both, but prefer the HHKB. The layout makes it for me.

Meh. The only thing that puts me off is that there is no CTRL key or F keys. They're needed for LoL and SC2. :(

What are you talking about? There's a control key, right next to the A key. There's no dedicated caps lock key, though.

Really?! I was never aware! Still, I'd much prefer it if it had a CTRL key in the normal place and F keys.

Standard layout from a Realforce will be easier for you if you want to game.

Hmm. I'd want a model with light keys though. Similar weight to browns. o_O

The HHKB layout is something you have to want. Personally, it's the only layout I ever use, given the choice, but I know it's not for everyone. I am a UNIX beard though.

Personally the ctrl key at the caps lock position is amazing. Makes it a lot more accessible IMO than normal place on the corner. The f keys are debatable but fn+ number isn't bad either. Anyway hhkb is terrific for me so far, use it for sc2. If not, go for the 86ub however this is variable weight.

I'm gonna jump in here even though I don't own a board with topres. I did make the mistake of buying a HHKB lite 2,(I know, I know, hold the stones) which I am currently using because it's better than anything else I own (no mechanical keyboards yet). But I find that I really like the form factor of the HHKBs and I absolutely love the position of the ctrl key, it makes it infinitely easier to use on the fly. But the issue that I've seen with this layout when playing SC2 (I don't use the Fkeys save for leaving the game, I know, I know, hold the stones) is that I got used to SC2 on a regular keyboard and I always make the mistake of hitting the control key when I want to hit the shift key because I'm still not used to the ctrl key being higher than the shift key, which as you probably know, resets the control groups instead of adding said building or unit to the control group. But other than that I've ran into no real issues with using the HHKB layout for SC2.

I'm kind of thinking that Ctrl placement would actually be easier for control groups.  I'm always annoyed when trying to hotkey stuff on 9/0... It's too far to reach, and I don't have small hands

lopan advised me to change Capslock into Ctrl using the reg file here: http://johnhaller.com/jh/useful_stuff/disable_caps_lock/

You might remember I have a picture of two Ctrl keys on the 86U I sold.

Of course, this only works if you run Windows.  Really, Capslock is the most useless key on the whole keyboard, followed by Scroll Lock, and Pause.

I live in Washington State also Lister, and I love my Caps Lock!!!! Actually, I agree with that statement. Obviously, it's not going to be used much. I like the caps lock LED feature on the 87's though. It would seem to me that the Topre Realforce is better quality. But, if someone really likes the layout of a HHBK.... then go for it.

I do like the white Realforce the best.  But I have to buy a black one to go with my yellow keycaps because yellow keycaps look best on the black.  I may buy another white 87U later, especially if the uniform 45g will be available.

Realforce definitely feels more solid than the HHKB. I just think small keyboards can't feel as nice as TKL or fullsized ones.

its the same with Poker, they just don't feel as solid as the my TKL, Meka, or BWU

The white Realforce's are gorgeous. 45g sounds perfect for me but I'm not sure I can get them in the UK? o_O

They're a must in higher leagues. Got to use them for default locations. Especially your main, natural, 3rd and 4th expo.

^^^ This. The HHKB is really nice, but for the feel, I find it hard to beat the Realforce. It's really well built, and feel "substantial", for lack of a better word.

I agree with this ^^^
The control key where the capslock is make so much sense.  After I got used to it on my HHKB, I've not remapped all my other boards for the same.

Also, having both a Realforce 86UB and HHKB Pro 2... I don't see a big build difference.  Sure, the HHKB is lighter, but they feel very similar to me. I prefer the HHKB layout in every way except the arrow keys which I use a lot.  If there's a HHKB3 one day with dedicated arrow keys, my dreams will have come true.

Your dream has already come true, as long as you can get used to funky JIS layouts. Price isn't even too bad considering the recent EK markups.

Only $310 at Geekstuff4u.

Compared to the $579 silent model it's a steal.

It says it has 3,8mm key travel, thus the foam ring does reduce the key travel.
