I think I chose the right switch.
« on: Wed, 10 August 2011, 02:19:07 »
I was out with a friend today and he wanted to get another HDD for his computer so we popped into a local computer store that I haven't been in for ages. Obviously I headed right for the keyboard section and to my delight they had a BlackWidow and ThermalTake Meka G1 on display. So I did a little fiddling and decided that I'm not really a fan of black switches. It might be purely due to me being used to my blues now, but I felt like I was having to put too much effort into pressing a key and kept missing them. In addition, with no tactile bump or clickyness I felt fairly lost when trying not to bottom out. I'm sure I'll pickup a board at some point with blacks in the future, but I am glad I went with the blues when I was buying and right now wouldn't trade them for any other switch. The BlackWidow felt exactly how I expected, it has the nice feel of the blues, but it doesn't compare to my Ducky. Still feels like you are on a cheap board in comparison.

I do agree about the build quality of the Black Widow. And I may be a sheep, but Browns are still my fav switch

Cherry Brown FTW!

I don't have a lot of time with all the cherries, but I've put in time on blacks, browns, and blues.  Blacks and Blues both have higher actuation pressure than I care for.  And for me, the actuation click (as opposed to the lesser "clack" that nearly all keyboards exhibit) of the blues isn't something I'm a fan of either.

From what I've read, reds are a lighter black, but still no bump.  I like the bump.

I damn hope I'll have a similar story to yours to tell, ONCE I get the keyboard (air mail from china heck yeah).

Tried the BlackWidow, and while I like the click I think it will get on me after a long time of typing, but the bump was wonderful to have there so I ended up picking browns. I'm sure ashort will agree on that decision.

Blues and buckling springs are both my favorite switches.  Tactility and clickyness are the two reasons I wanted to switch to mechanical keyboards in the first place.

I also called my friend over who has never seen or used a mechanical keyboard to come try them. I showed him the Meka G1 first and his immediate reaction was that he didn't really like it, and then I put him on the blues and his face lit up as he started typing and he said he liked them a lot.

RE: Blues and gaming at a LAN center.

It would seem to me that if you are playing someone else, they may not want you to hear with painful accuracy, every keystroke they make.

Worn-in Blues are so amazing to type on. I never realized that the keys got lighter with time but I can see how some people might be turned off by them at first.

I already had a Filco with browns, it was why I went with brown switches in the Poker too.  I love brown cherry switches.

I can understand the distaste for the gratuitous extra click of blue switches, but personally I love it.  I take my keys loud and tactile.  Right now I use blues at work and buckling springs at home.  I also have a Cherry board with black switches but I can't say I prefer it to the Unicomp for gaming (which for me means just Starcraft).

Browns are too light for me.  Haven't yet tried reds or the various clear mods.

The click is something I really really like on the blues. Its also fun to be talking on Skype and then suddenly let rip with a quick e-mail or start IMing someone else and the first time usually gets interesting responses from people.
