Rookie questions about gaming keyboard.
« on: Mon, 05 September 2011, 10:25:30 »
Hi pros,

I am a rookie in this forum and i am confused by "cherry switch" and "blue/brown/black" things. Currently I think the "brown" one is the lower risk case and I would like to ask you pros give me a complete product name. Or even better a link in amazon or other websites where you recommend to buy.
1. I live in Germany. but I would rather to have a English layout keyboard.
2. I will use it for programming and playing games like wow or Diablo 3 hopefully soon.

Many thanks in advance and any suggestions are welcome.

-Jay

I'm having some similar decisions to you, so far I think the Filco Majestouch 2 from The keyboard Company comes with clicky blues, soft browns or harder blacks for £114 inc VAT.
Alternately Razer has the Blackwidow (blues) and Blackwidow Stealth (browns) and also Blackwidow Ultimate (and silent) which are backlit ones.
DAS is another keyboard maker I looked at and they sell their DAS Professional (blues) and Professional Silent (browns) in the 105 ISO key versions on getdigital (dot) de. They also have an Ultimate model with blank keys.

From what I understand is the Filco is better quality but costs slightly more and the Razer has extra keys for macros. DAS is apparently equal in quality to Filco but again no Backlighting.

The switch you hear us all talk about is the Cherry MX switch by a German company called Cherry Corp as I understand it, they seem to be the most common mechanical switch by far. There is plenty of information on the Wiki on this site.
Edit: I'd love to link you but being a newbie I'm not allowed to post links.
E2: Forgot to link the german site.

Or could you pros let me know whether the following one is a good choice or not. (But i doubt it is Germany layout though since the name of it is Cherry-G80-3000LSCDE-2)

this one has blueMX switches, just like the Razer Blackwidow.
see here: clicky  / Klick Druckpunkt

a German layout "gaming" keyboard for a resonable price is the Steelseries 6gv2  -  about 60,-€
This one has 6KRO and black switches. The cherry G80 has 2KRO. I play a lot with both a G80 and a 6KRO keyboard and dont feel any difference.
Also TTeSports Meka G1 seems to be a candidate, but 100€ is a bit much imho.

For 100€ and more there is the DAS Keyboard.

You can also find a lot of second hand keyboards from cherry for nice low prices on ebay like this and this. They should be with blackMX. Mostly in good shape. I own a few of these, too.
