Ergo Clears perfect for typing and gaming?
« on: Sun, 18 September 2011, 15:48:39 »
Hello dear and fellow hacking geeks!

I wonder whether I would be statisfied with Ergo-Clears for my daily driver, that is used for FPS-, RTS-gaming and all the other internet-stuff.
Right now it is an unmodded Raptor Gaming K1 with MX-Blacks which are really a little too stiff for gaming (poor pinkie :*(    ). I also don't know whether I would like tactile better than linear and as result I am looking forward to modding it.

An alternative to Ergo-Clears would be MX-Browns, which are pretty hard to get here in Germany, and I don't know whether these would be too light for me.
I tried to get some MX-Brown Board to try the brown switches and eventually swap them with the blacks or at least use their springs to build ergo-clears, but until now my search was not that successful.

So, right now I am thinking about getting a cheap blue board, that I can easily get in Germany, to use its springs to create the Ergo-Clears. But if I got a blue board I wouldn't be able to try whether browns are better for me...

Btw: The MX-Clear board is also easy to get, so no problem about that part ;)

What do you think, are the Ergo-Clears too tactile for gaming and I should better go with browns? Or can nothing go wrong with Ergo-Clears?

Thx in advance and regards

20€ shipping to germany... that's a real lot for 4 switches.
I'd rather hear some opinions about gaming with Ergo-Clears.
Then I could mod my whole KB for round 60€  ;D

Farnell also wants loads of money just for shipping :/
I'd be glad if I knew of any german distributors for these.

Yeah, you're probably right, but if someone already knows the girls I like, I can ask how others liked 'em for ... err... gaming, before I spend too much on them. ;)

E: I know about the typing on the blues, even tried them myself a little, but for me they're too loud and really not ideal for gaming.

I personally like the ergo clears for gaming...I find the extra tactility useful, at least for FPS.

^ Have you tried ergo clears for gaming?

I've tried both reds and browns for gaming and prefer ergo clears.

you could make ghetto browns from cherryblues by gluing the white and blue stem together. it's actually a tiny bit more noticable than a brown bump like a in between brown and clear actuallly.

We have perfect consensus!

But that's just what I want to read: people's opinions about this. Even better would be if people gave reasons :d

OP has a Raptor K1 with Black MXs.
But I can get blues easily :P

And the Ghetto-Browns sound pretty neat imo. Between browns and Ergo-Clears, huh? Maybe I'll give that a try.

Well, I'll go and have a nap now.
I'd appreciate if all you switchgurus fight for your fav switch here :D

The idea of getting a blue board for its springs and the possibility for ghetto browns is my favorite yet.

Good night and best regards

yea the idea of a ghetto brown basically is for ppl in your case, who just can't get a brown or have a blue, are sick of the noise and want a cheap way to get a brown, lots of ways to think to glue it, changes the mm distance it actuates as well.

btw imo clears might be bad for gaming, depends, but i definitely notice that it's MORE difficult to double tap properly with clears than with browns, ergo or not, or maybe because there's less force in a brown spring, to "spring" the clear up that fast, that it seems to "lag" behind.

How about emailing Cherry Corp and ask nicely for some clear switches?

After thinking for a day or two I decided to go with brown switches that I'll get from the land of opportunities.
I think I'll want some really light switches, so I'll probably be fine with the browns or with ghetto-reds.
Ripster mentioned some issues with glueing the blue switches together and as my crafting-skills are almost non-existent and as I really wouldn't want to use the blues like they are, I kinda dismissed the MX-Blues.

One more question:
I already read some of you modded your K1s but I'd really appreciate an excact instruction of how to remove these skirt thingies around the switches.
Really don't wanna desolder and resolder them all ...
That would be really kind :]

Regards and Good Night from Germany

You have to desolder and resolder them all if you're talking about the black housing around the "+". Plate mounted switches require lots of desoldering and soldering, PCB mounted switches require no soldering to change the spring/stem.

Well,
The K1 is actually pcb mounted but there are little and loose plastic skirts around the bottom of the switches.
So, to change stems and/or springs you will have to remove these skirts first.

Pcb mounted? Why not just try the ergo clear mod then?

How hard is it to remove the skirts?

I never had much trouble. Just ask the ladies.

pcb mounted is cool beans, stupid plate mounting makes you basically commited for life unless you spend 2hours desolder/resolder.

The only problem was getting the stems and switches for a reasonable price and

To remove the black top housing of the switch I used a needle point. The left and right sides have two tabs each that come down from the top and clip onto the bottom. Pop them off one side at a time.
