Your Go-To Model M's Birthday!
« on: Mon, 17 October 2011, 18:30:15 »
Mines Apr 14, 1988, like my sig says.  Plant No. J2, ID 1345613

It would be cool to find a board made same day, same plant in the possession of some two geekhackers!

(ps- if this has already been done I apologize.  It's nowhere to be seen in recent threads.)

Mine was born on October 14th of 1987. Celebrated its birthday by adding a teensy to her. She now runs like a top.

I've got over a hundred of them, but don't have all the dates cataloged.  Of the ones I do, 1988.4.11 is the closest to yours.

My favorite Model M manufacture date though is my 1985.6.10 purchased from Killer Bee, the earliest known Model M in existence.

That's a little hard to say - I have a couple of Model Ms I am fond of.  The later (Blue label Lexmark and Unicomps) seem to be a bit lighter and faster, but I also have a 18 May 1987 (0131) Old School IBM board that I really like - and it is heavier and "crisper".  And a 2001 Unicomp M is a real favorite as well - it feels very "right".

There is some variablility, but any decent condition Model M is better than whatever is in second place!  I'm a little puzzled by all of this interest in Cherrys, etc - the Holy Grail is the Model M!  Right now I am typing on my newest actual IBM/Lexmark marked board, an M13 dated 12/27/1995 - and it rocks just due to having the Trackpoint - no mouse needed!  But when I first got it, I had to "recalibrate" my fingers - I didn't intially like the lighter feel!  Almost like you could get ahead of yourself!   After using it for a couple of weeks, I found it to be just fine.  Those who think the older dated Model M is too "heavy" need to look into the mid 1990's Lexmarks, or go with a Unicomp - I think they will be pleased.  Something for everyone!  Thinkpad Fan

One of my SSK was born on 1-22-91 in plant F7
and the other on 9-3-93 in plant F8 ... probably the last batch before they became Lexmark.

I like my rarest.  The Industrial Mini.  9/5/95.  Even has drainage channels.

With IBM Model M's older is not necessarily better.

F***** plastic rivets.  What a dumb idea.
whats wrong with plastic rivets

16JUL87 an old-style 1391401, but it is likely to be replaced soon by:

29DEC86 a really nice 1390131 when I finish with the bolt-mod.

PS - clikcykeyboards.com keeps a big list, but they are mostly not for sale.
