Mx Browns, Blues or Blacks
« on: Tue, 18 October 2011, 16:25:33 »
I live in Europe(Latvia) and the keyboards I can get for a decent price are quite limited.
I would mainly be doing a lot of typing and gaming (starcraft 2, quake live).

I've read a lot of information on different switches and I think the browns would be the best for me as they are the middle-ground between gaming and typing.

these are my current options (total price with shipping):
155 USD for WASD keyboard with Cherry MX Browns
112 USD for Steelseries 6 v2 with Cherry MX Blacks
105 USD for Razer BlackWidow with Cherry MX Blues (I would love to buy this one but I've read too many bad things about the quality of this product)
170 USD for ZOWIE GEAR Celeritas with Cherry Mx Browns

I've only used rubber dome keyboards before. Steelseries seems like the best deal for me (good quality product, fairly cheap), but the black switches are supposed to be pretty stiff and I'm a bit scared of that.
BlackWidow also seems like a good deal but there seems to be too many known issues with that board.
There are not many reviews on WASD keyboard but everything seems fine with it.
ZOWIE CELERITAS seems great but is a bit expensive.

I've never used one or even tried one but the one I'll buy I will probably use for at least next 3 years so it's kind of a big deal. :)
Any advice would be appreciated. I am leaning towards browns though (WASD keyboard in mind), but I could also get Blacks if they were decent for typing.

I'm also from Europe. I would love a Leopold Tenkeyless with Cherry Browns, but those shipping costs..man :/

Sorry to reply with a question instead of answers, but I'm a newbie about mechanical keyboards: what bad things have you heard about the blackwidow (besides the glossy finish that is fixed by the stealth version)?

I'm currently typing on my brand new Leopold with browns. About a week ago, I was in the same position as you. I will say, browns (in reference to actuation force) feel pretty close to RDs, maybe a bit lighter. It feels quite linear, with a subtle bump at the actuation point. Overall, they're a decent starter, and essentially serve the purpose of teaching you what types of switches you like. For example, I like a stronger tactile bump.

Back to the question, why not start with a Leopold? They're solid, and pretty cheap ($120 shipped). If you really want customization, go for WASD.

Side note: where'd you get that price for the Zowie? They're a little over 100 on Newegg.

ErgoDox Classic Aluminium (MX Reds) | Leopold TKL Otaku (MX Browns) | Rosewill RK-9000 (MX Blues) | Dell AT101W (Alps Black)

Happily typing in Dvorak

I wouldn't care too much about the glossy finish. Many people have problems with the spacebar and other keys getting stuck.

I'm from Europe. Newegg doesn't ship international.

I don't really care for customization.

As a European I dont know why you would bother getting a leopold as you will be missing 1key and have a small enter

Well, I prefer ANSI to ISO, personally, I can type on both no problem - I like the left shift! and the tilda position just makes sense

Also be sure to check out the classifieds, some good deals to be had there...

I think I might actually go for BlackWidow.... If I get a faulty one I'll just replace it. I don't really mind the loud clicky sound and 6KRO should be more than enough.

Like when would you ever press more than 6 keys at a time in game anyway?

Well, at this point during my research, because getting the Leopold from EK is 30 EUR cheaper than getting the "equivalent" Filco from the Keyboard company.

(sorry for kinda hijacking the thread)

WASD brown or Blackwidow blue. Either are excellent.

Once you are bitten by the mech key bug, you will care less about the price. For starters, Blackwidow is all right.

Nice choice on Das! I bet you will like it! Das has very good quility, though i dont know if you mind the glossy finish on the outer upper case!

Enjoy and when you get it tell us how you like it!

As of now I think I would go with a das over filco also

I live in Europe also and the filco tenkeyless will cost me 204$ and a fullsize 215$ while I can get the das for 164$(Still alot more expensive than the US though)

Yep, that's the deal I got too. Could have gotten the steelseries or blackwidow for ~100USD but wanted Brown switches and the quality of BlackWidow is also crap.
