"Laptop style" keycaps?
« on: Fri, 21 October 2011, 10:35:02 »
Hey,
Weird request here, but I just recently starting using a mech (rosewill rk-9000 reds). Before making the switch I was a huge fan of scissor-type keyboard, having liked the low-travel, snap-response feel.

Well anyways, I kinda miss the keycaps most laptop-style keyboards have. You know, the shallow, wide, barely crenulated keycaps on most scissor-type boards. Anyone know where I can get a 104 key set that'll fit my rosewill?

I also prefer them over the regular keycaps.
The G80-3800 will use wider keycaps I think

not necessarily. the g80-3800 (when it's available in the west) keycaps WILL fit your rosewill, save for the modifiers/spacebar.

Maybe you should look into the Cherry G84-4100

Maybe I'll just buy it for the keycaps -_-

I'm not. I meant the type that are on PC laptops. I did some digging around, and I guess they are called "low-profile" key caps.

You can't use these keycaps on a Cherry MX keyboard. this board has cherry ML switches. they are a bit different. This is the only mechanical keyboard that I can think of with laptop style keys. I have one and It's pretty good. It was my favorite for a while until I got my first board with blues.

I'd actually like to try one sometime, but that's sorta expensive to try one sometime. So I probably won't. What's with the super tiny spacebar on that one though?

So why do you like them?

For me the depth of the keycap actually gives more precision for typing. Fingers can register where the keys are better.

Perhaps you need a set of cherry mx flat top relegendable keycaps and some rubber o-rings to reduce travel. That's the clsest you'll get to what you're after short of buying a lenovo keyboard.
