Been typing on blues thinking about reds, just have some questions
« on: Fri, 04 November 2011, 11:03:33 »
Hey fellow GHers, I have been typing on monterey blues lately and the are loud. This might be do to the board being old, and I was just wanting to know how the WASD boards with blues sound compared  to an old board that has blues in it? are cherry blues quieter then monterey blues? Also I was thinking of getting reds since I do program all day next to a support call coworker. I know reds are great for gaming but how do they feel to type on? Thanks for the help :)

Blue is still pretty loud if you are concerned about the phone picking up the clicking noise of the cherry blue.

Bron can also be a consideration other than red.

I just figure if I am going to get a different switch I would try something completely different, I have also heard that typing on reds is like typing on boobies. lol. I mean very fluid like. In regards to browns, If I am going to have a tactile I would also want clicky personally. I would also use this board to game as well so thats why the reds seems nice, Wish I could try all these switches out before buying :(

See my MegaKeyboard Sound Recording Roundup.

I think Cherry Blues are louder than Montereys.
I will take a look Thanks!

After listening to everything I don't think it is so much the click. its just me bottoming out, maybe a set of dampening pads would help. I also think that since I already have a clicky keyboard maybe a silent one would be nice too.... I started off looking for the cheaper mech keybord and now I am up to customizing EVERYTHING on the board. My wife already hates it, for some reason on my monterey K108 it just feels hard to push, that's why I was thinking reds, to get rid of the tactilce bump and click might make it smoother?

If you bottom out the blues, you will certainly bottom out the reds. You'll need o-rings or soft landing pads to quiet them. I use 40A durometer o-rings on red switches and like the combination a lot. WASDkeyboards.com has 2 kinds of o-rings to choose from. Another option to consider is black cherries, they're as smooth as reds but harder to bottom out, so you wouldn't need the dampening as much.
Kinesis Contoured Advantage & Advantage2 LF with Cherry MX Red switches / Extra keys mod / O-ring dampening mod / Dvorak layout. ErgoDox with buzzer and LED mod.
Also: Kinesis Advantage Classic, Kinesis Advantage2, Data911 TG3, Fingerworks Touchstream LP, IBM SSK (Buckling spring), Goldtouch GTU-0077 keyboard

you see it's not that I always bottom out it just feels like I have to with this old board of mine, I worry about blacks and getting fatigued throughout the day. I think getting o-rings is the best bet, does anyone know if best buy is going to stock the black widow silent versions then I can test out blacks :), I hope so because if I can test out blacks I can decide if I need more resistance or less, which is really my big question. I am sure I can get used to anything. I could always just go with blues with 0 rings as well....ahhh so many possiblities! Thanks everyone with the help so far...

Quite a lot of geekhackers actually claim brown to be better for gaming or as good as red.

really? didn't know that, I just cant have blues at work everyone can hear them over the phone and it might get annoying to others, so I a thinkin either reds or browns. I am throwing out blacks, I just know they will fatigue me during my coding sessions or 5 -7 hours, it gets pretty intense :) oh and BF3 play :)

Reds are great. I don't think they will disappoint.
I Used to be a "blue cherry only!" kinda guy. but I think I like reds more.
I would go for them for sure :)

Always good to hear from a blue team member! I think the exclusivity of Reds is very appealing as well. Would not mind being one of the first WASD keyboard with reds owner!

Reds are good for moving around when using the WASD movement cluster while gaming.

If you are a fan of lighter keys, then reds could be for you. They don't prevent those accidental presses like a black switch, but they are extremely easy to use. I would recommend reds, with dampening pads. That will give you a nice soft landing as you will be bottoming out without any effort.

I will say I do tend to hit letters on accident so maybe blacks would be better. Has anyone used blacks for typing all day..? Any comments on blacks for typing?

Some people like them for typing, but most who try them don't.  For me they were so heavy that they came across as mushy.  I don't get that feeling from reds.

Having bought a Leo with reds and a Filco with browns over the past month, if I had to do it again, I'd probably buy two red switch based boards.  Will say though that I'm expecting the browns to break in a little over the next few weeks/months.

Well I swung by BestBuy today and typed on the blackwidow ultimate and they are much more quiet then my Monterey K108 with blue sliders. So after all this discussion and input I am actually going to go with cherry blues. I just live that little click sound. Thanks fir all the input everyone and I am sure I will try all the switches before I am done with keyboards LOL
