 Those looks great, I think I made the right choice with the red, the anodizing turned out good for it and didnt come out pinkish.

That Blue looks good also and was my second choice.... food for thought for round 2 if it does happen.

Thanks also imsto for the pics... did they ship out already?

From iMavs thread it looks like he has some extra's he ordered and he has some white engraved poker one's. you should pm him to see if he has any left.

Also if dont like the color you can probably just paint it or re-anodize it( not sure if that is possible but maybe)

EDIT: and oh yeah **** the newbie haters that say this is a rip-off, ever try try pricing something made to spec via CNC milling and powder coating?

check mountainmods dot com, it makes CNC milled PC cases, mind you i find the pricing quite reasonable.

If you think $140 is unreasonable for a CNC machined block of aluminum that size then you haven't looked at getting it done in the US.

$140 for a CNC'd hunk of aluminum that size is not a rip off.  Hell of a lot cheaper than getting the same thing done in the US (likely the UK where fossala is as well).

Time is money.  CNC machine time quadruply so.  You have to amortize the cost of the machine, pay for the power, cutting bits and coolant.  Then you also have to pay the dude who is running the machine.

I think I saw anodizing costs around $40/ea in low quantities for something this size in the US.

How much it cost to make have no bearing on the perception of how much things should cost. How many non-enthusiasts think mechanical keyboards are overpriced? They can't all be jealous of mechanical keyboard users.

While you can home-anodyze (especially if you have a low voltage high current power supply, like I do) the finish really doesn't come out as nice as if you get it done professionally.

1 step   get the material    aluminum alloy board
2 cut it to almost fits the shape
3 cnc it, and make all the holes, esp the hoe for miniUSB
4 do something to make the surface to be more smooth
5 do 4 again so it may be easy to be anodized
6 anodize it

it's a little bit easier to make the nubs.
1 get a aluminus alloy stick
2 make the nubs with a lathe
3 make the surface smooth
4 anodize

there're two types of  rubber nubs, so two mold needed.

How about:
1. powder metallurgy.

Actually, I kid. While it would be possible, I imagine it'd be prohibitively expensive as you need to vacuum sinter it. On a related note, how hard is it to make a conventional oven airtight?

But sill: the idea that SP could in theory make metal or ceramic keycaps with similar (or the same) machines they use now to injection mold plastic is pretty cool.

I'm most interested in how those screw nubs work that allow the PCB to be screwed in. Are they just glued into a small hole that is cut into the metal?

I think they are called standoff screws, same as ones used in computer cases where you rest the motherboard on standoff screws and hold down the motherboard with another screw screwing into ther standoff screws.

I'd move the web service of bbs.kbc-china.com  from Hongkong to inside China, need some kind of certificaion, you know, thanks for the government.....

but it's almost finished, now can be visited with this :  http://w197177.s98.myverydz.com/forum.php
when we get the certification    http://www.likeyboard.com will also be the same as bbs.kbc-china.com
and http://www.aikb.com will start work together. aikb is just like a diy team, haha   who made the aluminium casing.
aikb.taobao.com will also work too.

I did not know this... how low/high.  I think I have a 60Amp 5v PSU.
Most of the sources I have read recommend a 6-12V PSU, like what car battery chargers use. though the process should (in theory) work at 5V, it will be much slower. You can use a computer power supply for this.

metallurgy  there might be small holes on the surface I think.  to make this kind of stuff stamping is the best way, but...  it's usually for big ammount like ipad casing.
It would give it an excellent matte finish, though. Also, there are ways to make it closer to fully dense, liquid phase sintering for example. Your real problem would be the shrinkage while sintering. It's pretty easy to calculate this, though. For stamping, I would worry about internal stresses in the metal. It's what... 2 inches deep? No: CNC looks better.

Hmm, I wonder if some phantom-compatible cases could be made... I know I'd want one.
