IPS panel in a 42" or larger TV?
« on: Wed, 09 November 2011, 18:48:39 »
Does it exist without costing an arm and a leg? Currently running with a 720p 32" vizio, pretty happy with it but I think this black friday it's time to move up, so i'm taking suggestions on a good, and if possible, inexpensive tv. Preferred brands are Vizio (el cheapo) LG (you're probably getting an LG panel no matter what you buy anyways) or Samsung (high end, you pay a premium for samsung but i've been happy with the brand in the past, and IIRC the only brand likely to include it's own panel besides LG.)

Any suggestions?

The vast majority of LCD and LED televisions are IPS these days, it's just not a marketable thing. That said, in sizes like 42 inches and larger, why not consider a plasma? Panasonic in particular have gotten plasma to the point where it's as good in terms of power consumption as their LCDs, while being cheaper and still holding the traditional plasma advantages like refresh rate and contrast ratio. The only real downside to modern plasma is that they tend to be a little heavier, which is a consideration if you are mounting it to a wall.

I sell TVs for a living, and I've got to say I probably wouldn't own an LG after seeing the number of them that need to be repaired. I don't know about Vizio, as we don't get that brand where I live, but Samsung plasma seems to have much higher power usage than the Panasonics (spending all the R+D budget on LED backlit LCDs? They certainly are pushing them hard...)

Just a few thoughts, anyway.

Really? I was under the impression that TVs used TN panels to keep costs down. A 27" IPS display will run you about $900US, so wouldn't a 42" IPS TV be ridiculously high-priced? Does pixel density really have that much bearing on price?

Volume has a big effect on the price, and in large TVs more people are interested in image quality than in PCs.  So, you have TN in the PC sized panels across TVs and monitors, IPS (and *VA and others) at high prices in PC sizes and resolutions, and then in the large panel TVs you have IPS again because when you get that big you are also shopping on image quality, not just size.

Don't get me wrong, I know LG generally makes off-and-on products. I had an absolute turd phone from em, but i'm running an LG monitor and i've been pretty happy with it.

Is my assumption that most brands use the same panels anyways correct? I know this to be true in laptop/computer panels but I can honestly say I don't know about Televisions

And I suppose I just discounted Plasmas without thinking about it (old tech and all that). I'll take it into consideration.

I do not think Vizio even makes Plasma screens.

IMO, the best IPS panels are the IPS-alpha. They only make up to 37" panels though (Panasonic has them).
The main supplier of IPS is Chimei and LG. (Samsung and AUO makes VA). Quality between brand and technology doesn't matter that much. I mean, Sony uses inferior VA, and people are happy watching theirs and branding it the "best." I'd pick one on connectivity features more than the quality of the screen. HDMI, DVI, 1to1 pixel mapping for HTPC use, etc.

Plasma on the other hand is full of win.

Most brands use the same panels, but its VERY rare for a panel to fail. It's usually the power supply, again, especially in LGs. Again though, I'll recommend a Panasonic plasma in the 42 inch range, something like the TH-P42U30A (model number might be different in your country).

AFAIK, LG 47LD450 is guaranteed to have an S-IPS panel. I think it has been superceded by a new series though, but I recommend reading up on its successor, LK450.

I own the 32LD450 (made sure it's S-IPS from the packing at store) and it's superb. It does 4:4:4 chroma subsampling (MUST for PC usage) and has non-existant input lag.
