See Thru / Acrylic Keyboards Pics
« on: Wed, 09 November 2011, 21:41:00 »
So after recently seeing some of the 356 series acrylic keyboards I have been a little memorized with the idea of a see-thru keyboard. After seeing a picture that ripster posted of a Mac Filco I have been wondering if there was any other acrylic or see-thru keyboards. So if you know of any or find any post pics of them here.

356 Acrylic keyboard:

other acrylic see-thru electronics that have made me want a see-thru keyboard:

This thread reminds me of all the days I spent on my little indigo iMac (the machine that caused much of this transparent craze) over 7 years ago. I loved that thing, it was a tough beast of a machine and I constantly abused it by having 10+ applications running and doing lots of photoshop and 3D rendering. It did a great considering it only had a 400Mhz G3 processor and 128MB of RAM...

The only other transparent peripherals I owned were the Apple Pro Keyboard and Apple Pro Mouse that came with the iMac and a Macally transparent ball mouse with changeable covers, one for each iMac "flavor". Now that I think about it, though, I also had a Harmon/Kardon iSub and the external speakers that came with my iMac G4 which were transparent acrylic.

I hated the "bondi blue" iMacs. Worst colour and worst name ever.

Apple still has some info of them as part of their ACMT certification, unfortunately.
---

Were I you, I'd grab a bunch of thin polycarbonate (lexan) from somewhere, cut it out with a saw and file, drill holes in the side (for bolts) (countersunk holes if you want it nice) and make your own case.

That's what I plan to do: It's gonna look awesome.

There is a good thread going here with making your own keycaps and it might be possible to mold your own case MYOC Thread

I had one of these phones growing up:
(Attachment Link) 31443[/ATTACH]

Around 1990 I owed a publication and we used a huge industrial mega-fax machine the size of a mid-size copier to distribute the trade information twice a week. We needed a telephone during the initial setup of some phone numbers. I told my business partner to get the cheapest f-ing telephone he could find over the weekend before we broadcast fax on Sunday night. He shows up with pretty much that same exact phone for $19. When it rang, it had a couple lights that flickered with the ringing. The clear plastic shell was built like a tank. It would be kinda fun to have it around.

Ahh, the memories :)

3d rendering in autocad costs like $200 or so I think from what I read, that split between like 30ish people isn't that bad at all, what other costs are involved so we know the pricing, it would be bad if we did the autocad file to find out that the production/start up cost is too high for everyone.

If you can find more info for us we can definitely take a look through that route.

Having owned several see through keyboard cases I can tell you one thing ... while they at first seem like they will be really awesome they are not.  Even in a very pristine environment they will fill up with little bits of everything and anything that has ever been on your desk and look gross very quickly.  While nice in theory in practicality they don't work out too well unless they are unused show pieces.

I had a pair of transparent MeElectronics M6's that looked nice.

Ripster, the Diodes are likely some sort of voltage -> current convertor to drive the BA drivers better, or it could be part of a crossover, protection from voltage gradients (the thump as you unplug) or to assist in maintaining impedance across different power levels and frequencies.

Soon I'll have a transparent amp to match. I just need 16 L brackets and some bolts.

I wanted one of those eMates so badly back in high school but never got one. They were like the netbooks of the late 90's, but smarter in a few ways... small, easy to carry, great battery life, and focused on specific tasks (it was particularly good at word processing). People have hacked all sorts of things onto them, including a wifi PC card driver that allows you to connect the eMate to a modern wifi network.
