Because of this forum, I now have 5 mechanical keyboards and one Topre is on its way. The problem is I only have 2 computers at home and one at work.  Once the Topre arrives, I'll have 3 spares that have barely been used.  This is insane; my wallet is not happy.

I own a Filco that I use all the time at home, and I have a spare Model M. The Dell AT101W I have is being given to family in the near future. But I do plan to build my own Dox later on so I suppose that means I will have 3, and I am perfectly happy with not owning more than that.

I have a Unicomp spacesaver, compaq 11800, dell at102 and a KBC poker. I also have white label model m in the post. The only thing left on my list is a happy hacking pro.

Its nice to cycle your keyboards IMO. It reminds you of what you like and why. Sometimes you dont spend enough time with a board and ditch it for another, only to realise later you prefer it.

There are other better places where you can toss your money at than just keyboards.

Other than the typing feel, what makes a mechanical worth the money is its durability and longevity. Keep on getting new ones and not able to use it to its fullest extent some what beats the purpose of getting a mechanical keyboard.  That's just me.

I am in the process of getting a second one for work though. I am currently carrying my keyboard with me everyday back and forth between home and work. But it will be just another brown switch keyboard. I have determined it to have the best balance between noise and tactility.

I have a wife and 2 kids. We all have computers. My wife believes that the best keyboard in the world is whatever Apple has manufactured in the last 6 months.

Otherwise, besides the keyboards hooked up to the 4 working computers, last weekend I counted 15 in the garage. These are non-working and/or waiting for repair and/or donor boards for projects and/or boards currently for sale on ebay.

Meticulously packed and boxed in the basement is my "collection/stash" of about 8 of my "most precious" backup keyboards.

About 3 weeks ago I gave away a dozen keyboards that were not worth selling on ebay.

I probably need psychiatric help, and I doubt that I even fall into the top (bottom?) third (tenth?) of fanatics on this forum.

I'm in a similar boat, since I've found Geekhack my keyboard ownership has gone up considerably.  I'm also one of those people that has a hard time getting rid of things that I don't use ... luckily I do have a LOT of computers in my house (I think we're at 11 right now between my wife and myself).  Unfortunately the wife hasn't come around to liking the mechanical keyboards yet and is the same as fohat.digs' wife in that she just happily uses whatever (crappy) keyboard that comes with her mac.  She has tried the mechanicals a couple of times but claims she can't tell any sort of difference between them and the scissor switch Apple boards.  Of course she bottoms out like no tomorrow on the keys (I can hear her typing two floors down sometimes) so maybe she can't feel the difference.  I certainly can!

I will say that my wife is very picky, and, being a magazine editor, does a WHOLE LOT OF WORK on a computer keyboard. She has taken to the thin flat aluminum Apples, probably because the key travel is so short and they are most like her Macbook.

She gave my teenage daughter the previous small white/clear one which she likes because it is cute, but I really dislike the feel of it.

I do have an AEK2 (including the adapter) in my collection, but I doubt that I will use it much again.

This is my feeling exactly also... I like to be able to cycle between switch types even though I only have like 2 computers (home / work)..before it was I had too many computers and not enough keyboards. I think this was the cheaper of the two options =P

Yep it's funny how that works out.  My wife is on her computer for the majority of her work too, she's a history professor and writer.  She was more excited about the oldschool "clicky" keyboards (she tried an Alps board or two I have) so maybe I'll get her into that ... and add some soundproofing between the floors

I've still only got one since March despite my original intention to get a collection. My younger brother also wants to get a mechanical now and so I'll probably order 2 Leopold TKL Blues soon. I was originally opposed to the idea of a tenkeyless keyboard, but the concept has grown on me and I think my desk could use a bit of extra space. Then I think that will be fine for me for a while longer until I get tempted to buy a red board and a brown one. I tried blacks and wasn't too keen on them so I think I'm better off sticking with the lighter switches.

If she subscribes to the "Apple Religion" I might be able to help you out. Too bad shipping to Canada is slow and expensive.

I have an AEK2 that tests fine but needs to be cleaned. I got it from a neighbor and it looks to be in Good/Used condition with light/medium wear and a few shiny spots just starting, more on the spacebar.

I was going to clean it and put it up on ebay for $20 plus shipping. Forum members would get a better deal, especially if they want to clean it themselves.

It has a long gray coiled cord, but you will need an ADB-to-USB adapter (shameful that Apple does not support its obsolescent hardware!). Usually they sell for $50 on ebay but sometimes turn up for $20.

It uses "white/cream" Alps that are dampened a bit and lots of folks swear by them (I like the original AEK with "pink/salmon/orange" switches better). The dampened Alps lose something, in my opinion, even though I have happily flossed a couple of buckling springs and been pleased with the results.

A few months ago I was throwing money at keyboards, in recent weeks I have been at my work bench drilling and scraping and painting, and it is somewhat more satisfying, if you want to shift your efforts a bit.

Hehe, that's true, buying keyboards is really addictive. If I remember it right I started to get interested in them half a year ago. And, well, now I have a black Cherry G80-1800 with MX Blacks, a grey G84-4100, an Unicomp Terminal Emulator, and an 1990 IBM Terminal board (a strange feeling: a keyboard older than myself…). Yeah, and yesterday I ordered another 12 grey G80-1800. But I will only keep 5 of them, so in the end I have 9 Keyboards and only 2 Computers. Your'e not alone!

Poor, poor Brazil. There are no mechs here, and Ms are as rare as honest politicians... I "own" only one mech (the infamous yet cheap Scorpius M10), but it is still retained at customs/tax collection (since october 19th!). I Think the officers are still deciding how deep will they stab me (the standard is 60% over price+shipping).
So, I think this is going to be my one and only mech for a long, long (and long) time.

The thing is though, you're German, you can get G80-1800's for cheaper than a loaf of bread.

I've got 3 G80-1800's coming soon, one of which is going to work so I can take my MX Brown Choc Mini home (which is soon to be silenced, and going to be the night keyboard) and the WASD I'm getting the girlfriend to get me for Christmas, dependant on how I like linear switches, I might get her to get me one in reds, if not, it'll be blues... But I have a big desk, and 3 computers (4 if you include the laptop) sitting on\around it so it works out...
