DH 200 Data Hand
« on: Mon, 05 December 2011, 10:38:32 »
I came across Geekhack trying to find out the value of a Datahand DH-200 I saw on Ebay but it now $599.99 I offered a little less than half that and got turned down ... Does anyone know it's true value? It is in as new condition and works. The listing ends in about 6 hours. I think it must have some value just as a collectible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

So I found this:

http://www.datahand.com/products/proii.htm

New ones with a mouse are about $1000.  I'm not sure about the DH-200, though.
Keyboards:
Filco 104 MX Brown (Otaku) - FKBN104M/NPEK 黒い空
Ducky TKL MX Brown/Blue 80% (White) - 1087-F 白の空
KBC Poker MX Red with PBT Key Caps - PFCN6000

I think there are a couple of threads talking about that particular sale, maybe in the "great finds" forum ... I would check them out before jumping in on that one personally ...

Ditto Gerk.
-Collectable value? Hmmmm doubtful....don't buy it based on that.
-No one has been able to get a response form either of the 2 Datahand sellers on ebay right now. I contacted both with no response as well. They have been lowering their prices.
-The units are obsolete, and you may not be able to have them work on your system (if that's what you want to do), that is assuming they work in the first place.
-One of the auctions is for a unit that is obviously incomplete.

Both of these auctions have popped on after several pristine, new model Datahands came onto ebay (auctions by end users) and had sold for higher than new prices. I personally believe that fueled the placing of these auctions (by ebay resellers, not end users) for the obsolete, incomplete, units asking for the same high prices.

Be careful and have no expectations. Be prepared to go to Datahand to try and buy parts to make the unit work. If you decide to buy, share your info here on Geekhack please!

Interesting that the one auction you say was offered about $250 and turned it down. That's probably the most he can possibly get, and I believe that even that is too much for that unit.

Some people think that things that are a little off the norm are made of gold.  I see it on Kijiji locally all the time here ... especially with older items that you can't get anymore.  There are some pretty famous made in japan guitars from the 70's and 80's for example (made at the Matsomoku factory).  They were cheap guitars when they were new and are all mostly copies of other famous guitars (Les Paul, Telecaster, ES 335, etc), but I've seen people list them thinking that they are the next best thing since sliced bread and asking for prices like $1500 or more for a gibson or fender copy that was only worth about $200 brand new -- and honestly maybe worth $300-400 _max_ for a serious collector now.  I watch them drop in price over time as people don't buy them.  Sometimes they disappear, sometimes they just wait 6 months and list them again.  I doubt they ever sell them at those prices .. the only people that would buy them are collectors or other people "in the know" and being "in the know" about these things I don't know anyone who would pay what they are asking.

Guess he was smart and accepted your offer. Congrats! Let us know how it works out :)

A current model Datahand Pro II was listed and snapped up today for $400. Now THAT was a deal (considering how crazy the prices have been recently). Looked very complete.

The other incomplete DH-200 in the suitcase is not currently listed. You're right Gerk, he may wait a while due to the 2 "low" sales and relist again....

The grey box is what everything plugs into...each Datahand, computer, lots of extra cables, etc.....sort of an old skool junction box back before they figured out a better way of doing it.
