Leopold MX Red vs. others for 'spill durability?'
« on: Fri, 16 December 2011, 13:53:34 »
I'm thinking of giving my fullsized Leopold w/ Cherry MX Red switches to someone who's openly a klutz when it comes to spilling stuff on keyboards.  She has been using the damn econokeys silicon keyboards for the last 7 or 8 years and they're crap.  The operator of the keyboard just said that in the past year, "50+ cups of coffee have been spilled, along with [all of the nasty crap like] ashes, food crumbs, cat hair, etc.".  Even though I never use the silicon keyboards, I get annoyed when reading anything typed on them.  Usually missing letters, other typos, etc. etc.

So I ask you, fellow keyboard geeks...

If the Leopold isn't going to hold up to this sort of abuse (I'm not confident it will), any other recommendations?  Looking for something sturdy, won't get killed by a single cup of liquid getting spilled on it, easily washable/cleanable.

Mechanical or non would be fine, but I'd prefer going mechanical if it will hold up.  Light key presses are preferable, other feature requests (LOL) are backlit keys and/or a "tabletesque touch screen" (like the cool leaf I'm guessing)

Thoughts and recommendations?  What keyboard would you get a slob?
Thanks!

Thanks, I just called Unicomp and their keyboards do not have the drain holes.  The guy I spoke with recommended one of their silicone keyboard covers, says that they seal pretty well and last a few years.

I don't think that buckling springs are the way to go here though :-/

My take is, if she is totally fine with crappy rubber dome... just get her another rubber dome, there are some nice ones out there.

Nobody likes to live with a slob.

Actually, it's for my mother, but you hit on a main reason I was happy to move out so many years ago :P

As for rubber dome... rubber domes aren't the problem.  The keys themselves are rubber.  soft and mushy feel, wear out every year.  http://www.ikey.com/keyboards?variant=39 I'm not sure which she currently has, but generally she gets those roll up ones.

Well, at least the sex won't get worse.

I have found it best to just let your mom do her own thing.

I've found that works best with your mom too ;)
Anyway, yes, I agree.  The problem is that I have to read the output of what she types and hear the *****ing when it breaks.

Perhaps a solution worth considering?

LOL, nice.  I actually recommended a sand blasting or other 'glove box' to put the keyboard in.
