Simplified Black Alps = ? Cherry MX / Buying Advice
« on: Sun, 18 December 2011, 04:36:41 »
Hey all,

Was looking to pick up an Adesso MKB-135B as my first mechanical, since it's the cheapest kb I found with Cherry blues and a USB hub. But, after stumbling upon the opportunity for a kb with simplified black alps switches, I was wondering how the two compared, or what the alps compared best to. I realize that they differ in the clicky department, but as a noob I can forgive that.

On that note, does anyone know of any <$80 keyboards with Cherry blues/browns and a USB hub? Thanks!

What keyboard are you looking at with the ALPS switches? It seems like there were never any Type II simplifieds (the crap ones) in black, so I presume this is Type I?

ALPS don't really compare to anything. I've never used simplified tactile switches (only short switchplate complicated blacks for tactile, in a new-in-box Dell AT102W), but the one thing ALPS switches are, is loud, even tactile. The ABS M1 Type I simplified tactile keyboard could wake the dead (although it sounds really decent), while Cherry MX blue has a gentler click and is one of the softest-sounding clicky switches. ALPS keyboards probably have the best sound of any switch type – decent bass clack and solid, sharp click, though a lot of ping in the the Type I whites.

ALPS switches in general are pretty stiff; I find them tiring when I use them for short periods, but that's probably through using Cherry MX brown most of the time which is extremely light; Cherry MX switches also have a very hard landing that greatly discourages hard typing otherwise it hurts your fingers, making every other switch feel terribly stiff in comparison to the light typing Cherry require (and I still struggle at home to press the keys lightly enough).

ALPS clicky switches have exceptional tactility and I find the sharp tactile point bothersome; the only clicky mechanical switch with a smooth tactile point like a dome switch, is buckling spring. I've got a tactile black ALPS keyboard, but the short switchplate on complicated blacks makes them feel terrible – there's no real tactile point in fast typing, so much as a progression of scrapes and bumps, that I would like to hope was fixed by the simplified switches; by comparison, blue complicated and Type I simplified clicky switches feel sharp, clean and smooth. (Cherry MX browns have a similar scrapy, bumpy feel but they're smooth and soft enough that it feels good, instead of bad.)

I would love to try a complicated tactile ALPS with long switchplates, but my use of the Windows keys rules out old keyboards for me, and preference for UK layout also rules out the ABS M1 simplified.
