My undestanding is that X is an old symbol for Christ, so Xmas is legit and not a satanic plot or an annoying modern contrivance. I'm sure that Wikipedia article someone posted will back me up.
Does the fact that celebrating on December 25th was adapted from pre-Christian tradition somehow make Christmas illegitimate? I've never understood why people throw that out like it's a shocking or disgusting revelation. I'm with the cynics though on the corporate raping of a holiday ostensibly about selflessness and joy. I salute iMav for refusing to exchange gifts at all.
The Puritans also saw Christmas as a sham by the way. It's one of the (many) things they felt was corrupt in the Catholic tradition.
