Which keyboard for me?
« on: Tue, 27 December 2011, 20:55:57 »
Hey,

I know, 900000000th thread of this subject, but I need help.

I've been using a mechanical keyboard with Blue's (Blackwidow Ultimate) for about a year now. I like it, but I want to get rid of razer, and I don't like how it looks. Blue switch is cool, I like the click, but I feel like I'd like to try another switch. Black's are a no-no in my opinion, because they sound very stiff and heavy. Browns would be pretty cool, but they're kind of "jack of all trades, master of none" type switch, which I don't want. Reds again seem pretty nice, I want a light switch, and red's the lightest, right? I want also a tenkeyless, Blackwidow's too big. :(

First I started looking at Filcos, and noticed the Linear R. Too bad they're like 300$ shipped to Europe pretty much everywhere, if you want a tkl version which I do. I wouldn't want to spend over 200USD on this keyboard. Then I started looking at Leopolds. Now that Leopolds are in sale for 89$ they seemed like a really strong choice for me. Then I read about the problems they have, with the controller and such. So no leopold for me I guess. Then Rosewills, they look good, but newegg doesn't ship to Europe, also the logo is so freaking ugly.

Now I've thought about waiting til next year and getting a Leopold 2012 model, if that has fixed all the problems the current one has.

Fellow geekhackers, what would you recommend to me ?

Tenkeyless, Cherry MX Red, preferably a black board with white blank / ninja / regular keycaps. Normal black keycaps are fine too, I'll just get the white caps seperately then.

I feel your pain in trying to a find a TKL board, and don't feel like dropping 200+ on a filco. I own a Leopold (brown) and I honestly can't say I've read or experienced any major problems with them. Most people tout them to be on par with Filcos and such.

I would advise against the brown switches, the little tactility you get will just feel useless and mushy compared to the stronger  tactility of the blues, in my honest opinion.

The only other choice I see besides a Leopold, even though I don't think it's a bad choice, is a PLU ML-87. These seem to be found on ebay for under 100USD. But I have no clue how these stand up build quality wise versus the benchmark filco.

It is still worth a shot. I, for one, like it a lot.

I don't want brown switches, because theyre basically blues without the click, which i like. Variable weights are a total turnoff IMO.

you'll probably appreciate brown a lot more when you got a woman holding a knife behind your back while you innocently doing all the click* click* click* not knowing the doom is about to come lol.
