What's a good cheap MX blue keyboard?
« on: Sat, 31 December 2011, 16:51:29 »
I just placed in my order for a Razer Blackwidow. I know it's sort of bad quality, but I don't know what other "good" mx blue switches there are.

Can anyone please post some suggestions below for some good mx blue keyboards that's under $100 USD?

I heard the RK 9000 was a good keyboard and I considered it, but I kind of cheaped out and bought blackwidow instead. I still got time to cancel the order, but i need some good suggestions.

Thanks

The crazy occasional RK9000 sale is your best bet. Other than that, there are cheaper blue boards, but most suffer quality wise. You can get a Cherry G80-3000 for around $80 shipped though, which is a good deal.
Risen from the dead for a model F.

Wyse buy colors were GSY for the dark grey, GBA for the light grey, and BBI for the fonts.

I really like my Cherry G80 3000 that I picked up from provantage. It'll run you about $80 shipped. I think that its a far better keyboard than the blackwidow.

Newegg has the RK-9000 for $99.99 + free shipping + a $20 gift cert, so if you need $20 worth of stuff there it would be a good deal.

The downside, they'll send you the gift cert via email 4 days after your purchase.

I was going to buy some crap there next month anyway, so come Monday I'll proly pick this up.

Well, having both the Blackwidow and the g80-3000, one clear QC difference is that all the caps on the g80-3000 fit the same. The stems seem to be uniform on it, whereas  on the blackwidow keys would randomly come off quite easily (if you wanted to remove them) or be extremely hard to remove.

I thought pbt is much harder to work with, due to shrinking, but razer's OEM doesn't seem to be able to get it right even with ABS.

IMO the Blackwidow is a good board for the price, you might as well keep it.

Thanks for the discussion guys. I've been using this generic dell keyboard with rubber domes for 6 years now. Hopefully the mechanical keyboard will be a huge upgrade for me.

Thanks & happy new years

Nothing wrong with the blackwidow. I have not heard a lot of complain about it. If you like the looks, you should keep it.

What this guy said.  From what I understand, the Blackwidow isn't a horrible board or anything.  It just may not be the value that some other keyboards are, given the quality of those boards.

It looks like necx.com will have the CMStorm with blues soon for $71 and change, shipped.

I was strongly considering this one if my wife preferred blues, but she wants reds. Need a tenkeyless, so likely the Leopold currently on sale.

I agree. I picked up my Mac version bw (only non ultimate in stock) for $63.xx shipped from NewEgg and I like it a lot.  The quality is solid, it's a heavy keyboard, has a nice braided cable too.  And this is me coming from an HHKB Pro 2 and having owned a Filco as well.  For 1/3 or 1/2 the price I think it's pretty good.  Plus the blues feel great =)  But if you're willing and able to spend $100 then yeah Leopold or RK were my next choice up but for $60 I couldn't pass up the Razer BW.

I heard the construction is shoddy and keys tend to go out. I also heard from somewhere else that the space bar is difficult to press, unless you are dead center.

^ well I haven't owned my BW for long but I can answer that the space bar is super easy to press, I press on the far left and never had an issue.

That statement make zero sense. The firmware update freezing has to do with your comp, nothing else. So making a comment of you not trusting a razer product due to your own system is just stupid as any product with a firmware you update can have this issue.

I have been using razer mice for years without issue, and I will continue to use them due to the quality of there mice.

Sadly no, I was in such a hurry I decided to buy it off without seeing the discount. It's still in the order process, and I rushed it as well. That could have saved me 11 dollars :(. How'd you find it? Edit: I would rather you just wait, it's not going to get inflated or anything like that UNLESS something happened =P.

Someone posted it over at OCN. I have been wanting to get a board with blues again. This will be the one. The first wave of boards sold out at the egg and amazon already. I'll probably have to wait until they get more in stock. You could have got it for like 75 shipped or something though. Either way nice buy. Its a great board. I don't really like the keycap font but I already took the stock ones off.

You're frigging right! Makes me sad, but I was afraid of it going out of stock, so I had to get it quick. at 75 it was already a steal, without the shipping. HOWEVER, with this promo, it IS a steal, and more so! So you already had one? By the looks of your post, you definately enjoy it, and it looks pretty small in the pictures, is that true?

BTW: Any keycap is compatible with the mx keyboard of cm storm right? I am thinking of buying the keycaps off of elitekeyboard or another place.

Yah I have the one with red switches. Ordered it from China. Its a great board. Its the standard size of a tenkeyless. So like a normal board minus the number pad.  And yes any cherry mx keys are compatible. Elite doesn't sell full sets though right? Just a couple extras.
