Boxes!
« on: Tue, 03 January 2012, 08:42:28 »
Hello!
I hate how companies make their boxes all shiny and fancy, that means I have to keep storing them! Buying far to much electronics I now have too many boxes I cannot sell without loosing second hand value for my things. How do you handle your boxes?

You could cut any tapes / open up glued flaps, and flatten them.

Put them up on eBay! Some idiot may bid, and then we can all laugh at him.

Electronics/Lego boxes go up in the attic to act as insulation.  Along with garbage BAGS of styrofoam pellet.

I keep my NIB Model M Minis in my Goatse vault.

I don`t think the attic is a good idea. There is an old man living there!

Well, selling them online implies buying even more boxes. Boxception!

I could flatten them out for easier storage, though that means I have to spend even more time with my boxes. YAY! Quality time with my boxes!

Or perhaps just call him realistic?  I keep retail boxes until the retail return period is over and then get rid of them.  I've never had an issue with resale value, but then I purchase most items as a long term investment.  I just replaced my 10yr old tube TV last year with a 32" LCD.  That panel will move to either my own or one of my kids bedrooms if I upgrade to a larger size in the living room.  I expect it will die of old age before I run out of things to do with it.  What I do sell to get rid of has gone for above-average prices since I keep my stuff in good condition and give accurate and verbose descriptions and pictures when selling.

Boxes? Recycle. Hell, I don't even keep the owner's manuals any more; I toss the hardcopy and download PDFs as needed.

This.  I only keep the boxes for keyboards I might want to sell or valuable electronics for moving purposes.

And **** paper manuals.  I can't Ctrl+F a paper manual.

I'm still using my Trinitron 720p (we don't watch much TV and I'm sure as hell not about to pay to watch the crap they push on Time Warner) 32" CRT as our ONLY TV.

We haven't had cable TV in 8.5 years, just Netflix and an HTPC connected to it.  The tube TV had no power button and some major firmware flakiness that was finally too annoying to deal with.  It was also a base-line 27" SDTV, jumping to 32" 1080p was a HUGE improvement especially considering the HTPC input.

I do keep some nicely sized cardboard boxes for shipping stuff out in.  Christmas is a great time to re-shuffle the collection since we get quite a few boxes in and send quite a few out.  Right now I'm sitting on several KB size boxes just in case I sell.  A number of HDD boxes for the same reason (easy to get more from work tho).  The biggest bulk tho is the blasted packing material.  Couple large garbage bags of that.

Much to my dismay, My wife makes me break down and store every damn box we get, I swear. We have almost no closet space in our dinky apartment so we have a chest with broken down cardboard amazon and misc boxes sitting in a recess in our hallway wall by our bedroom.

I've been saving my boxes in the basement.  There used to be a whole stack of them and I'm glad I kept them so I could ship them "in box" when I sold them.  I've pared down to the keyboards I plan on keeping so I'll only keep the boxes just for a while longer.  Right now I'm pretty happy with the current keyboards and like all of them so well that I don't have any intention getting rid of them.  So I'll probably get rid of those boxes.

I do totally know what you are getting at though - my husband bugged me to get rid of the boxes and I ended up getting rid of the keyboards as well.

I'm a total minimalist.  I absolutely can't stand extraneous **** in my residence, office, car, etc.

That's why I poop on the toilet.

Damn it.  I couldn't help myself.
