Need feedback from experienced users...... *Cherry Reds for FPS*
« on: Mon, 09 January 2012, 09:04:45 »
So I've decided that I want to go back to a full sized keyboard. Although I love my Filco in browns, I guess I've spent too much time with the tenkey and came to miss it alot.  (You can find it for sale in the classifieds)

So as a full size replacement I can't decide between reds or browns.  From my research and own experience, Browns are about 55g when you consider the tactile bump pressure. I like the idea of the linear for FPS gaming but I'm wondering if they will prove to be "too light" for me causing unintended movement.

Can someone who plays alot of FPS give me their experience with reds vs browns ?

I didn't like reds for FPS, but I have a strong typing style and big hands so I found I was accidentally pressing keys a lot. I think they are a great switch for gaming for light typers.

I've been meaning to write up my thoughts on this subject for a while now. Today I finally did.

That's partly my fear. I enjoy typing on the blues here at work and I'm not a super severe heavy typist but I've seen some issues already with the browns (rarely) where I may be hovering on a key and it in advertanly sprints me from cover and into the open.  I want a linear switch but I'm afraid that black will be too heavy. Although.... I guess if browns are not too heavy at 55g... Are black really that different since they don't have the tactile feedback ?

Tactility really made quite a different.

For those who never tried linear switch b4, go dig out a rubber dome keyboard. Linear switch feel like the rubber dome, without the bottom part. In other words, press the rubber dome till it is about to actuate(bump) and stop, thats roughly what you will feel on linear cherry.

Yes, blacks feel quite a bit heavier than browns. They are more apt to tire you out after a long typing session. For gaming that's a non-issue though, IMO.

Yeah , I found an old Wyse 60 terminal board here at work and it felt great except for the weight of the switch.  But then again , I don't know if they tend to get stiffer with age or just the older models had stronger springs as it was DRASTICALLY stiffer than the Blues I'm typing on now.

Probably dust got trapped inside the switch, increasing the resistant in it. Open it up and have a wash, then lube some lubricant on it and I think it will be good to go.

I'm playing battlefield 3 on reds. Best switch for FPS IMO. I couldn't care less about typos while playing (unless I accidently hit reload or something, which NEVER happens) and tactility gives you nothing anyway since you bottom out anyway.
Bottom line: go for it.

Few weeks ago I came to GH to find myself a good fps board. Lots of people.recommended reds so I went for reds.

Now Im a pretty good cod4 player (I used to play pretty high in the eSports scene) and play lots of quake.

Of all FPS cod4 has the most "advanced" walking. How many shooters allow you to walk diagonally, crouch and lean at the same time?

I hated the reds. Both for gaming and typing.
Why? While gaming I bash my keys, but when I want to release a button, i dont want to lift my finger, just let it rest and make de switch do.the work.

Playing on reds made me feel like a spastic. My brain said stop walking but my fingers didnt, after a month I was still walking into wals, etc

Im now looking for an alps.board with anti ghosting, once I.got.that ill be a happy man.

Sent from da phone, soz for typos and dots.

Interesting. So the conclusion I get from this is that it is yet again subjective, the only real way to find out is to try it for your self.

Lol yeah , that's pretty much been the story since I started trying to determine between reds and browns.   I think at this point I will go for the reds and see how it works out. If not , then I can quickly put it up for sale with a small loss to go back to browns.  I like the browns alot... but I just want to "try them all".

Playing alot of TF2 and MW3 on my mechanicals. Started off with blacks which were my favourite gaming switches for over a year... stiff, linear and with enough resistance for somebody like me who tends to use alot of force on the caps while playing. Then I got to reds which were simply too light and driving me crazy, especially the accidental misstypes while resting my fingers on the WASD cluster. After a while I switched to browns and settled on them for now. They're neither too light nor too heavy, feel great whilte typing aswell as gaming, accidental key presses are gone and the actuation bump actually helps with double-tapping.
All in all it's still a subjective matter and maybe you should give a sinklist a try.

I don't have browns but going from cherry blues to cherry reds I find that I like the cherry reds better than my blues, both keyboards being filcos. It just feels better not having to go through that actuation and double pressing is smoother without that tactility there from having to strafe and WASD very often and this coming from my experience from playing CS:S at a mid tier level. I think reds are a fine switch for fps and just gaming in general and perhaps better than blues for me but it is still always very subjective.

Well , It's settled.  I went with a WASD in reds for full size.  If my concerns prove accurate then I know I can always fall back on browns and they are much easier to find in fullsized.  I can tell you that after packing up my Filco browns for shipment and going back to my 5 yr old Saitek rubber dome....... I MISS THE FILCO within 2 keystrokes.

I love my WASD in Blues so I am confident in the quality. I just hope the reds fit my fingers well.   I also bought the Fiance' WASD blues for Christmas so they have gotten a nice chunk of change from me lately.  lol    I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A TOPRE BY NOW !!!

Thanks for the hopes for pleasant typing
