Project Ergo-clear KBC Poker

Snagged a donor board from eBay for $25 shipped.



It's a Cherry MX 8100 G80-8113 LRBUS/07. These sometimes come with brown switches, and occasionally they come with clears. This one in particular came with clear switches, lasered keycaps, and about 10 years of POS grime. The caps are taking a denture tab soak right now, more updates tonight!

Also hearing about people talk that ergoclears 'stick' instead of rebounding due to the lighter spring. Should this be a concern of mine for well-used clear stems? Does greasing the stem before re-assembly fix that? I'll be rinsing the stems, but other than that, I won't be touching them before transplanting.

I haven't had this issue on my poker with ergo's. But I did lube them when I put them in. I am actually looking into buying a donor board to put together another one for home instead of buying stems only from ebay for 45.

haven't had this issue, might be a "gummy" stem, who knows.

considering the board has 120 switches, I can always swap out one if it sticks (or push the leaf back a little). Greasing it will be a last resort, because it can get messy :(

Really? I'm kinda digging them :) but I definitely need to grease all the switches. Vanilla ergo clears are a little sticky, they don't seem to rebound as fast as I'd like em to. Another note, anyone familiar with removing the switches with LEDs so I can open them up? Short of desoldering it from underneath (or is this my only option?)

Nice looking board. Mine at work is a similar color scheme without the RGB modifiers and all caps blank. I love the black case with white/grey caps.

So do I. I think I might've depressed the gold contacts a bit too much on one of my keys, rendering it useless (so ill have to open it up and replace it). At the same time, my caps lock (mapped to ctrl/cmd) and my spacebar still have the LEDs in there, with their clacky blue sound. Still trying to come up with a creative solution to these. Don't know any local soldering folks to pop those off...half tempted to just find a way to bust them off somehow considering I don't use them anyways.

So I got my 5 key working again. I guess I had bent the gold cross points a bit to much when I was trying to remove some of the stickiness that comes with the low force blue springs with the super tactile clear stems. I also crushed the LEDs into a fine dust, and was able to successfully slip the top housing off the switch with LEDs on them. I no longer have LED's, but that's ok for me.

I've noticed some slight uneven key feeling in the board, so I tore it all down again, greased the offending switches and retuned the crosspoints (surprisingly they add a lot to how the switch feels). Now everything feels even and nice :) I'm still adjusting the the "ultra tactile browns" that ergo clears provide. I hope I get used to it eventually, because right now, it still feels like im straining to type.
