Mechanical KB replacement for Logitech G15?
« on: Tue, 17 January 2012, 21:21:03 »
It's time to replace my home computer keyboard. It's Logitech G15 and I've had it for about 4 years now. It's served me well, but the keys are getting worn out (require more pressure and some binding may occur if not pressed straight down).

I recently found an IBM Model M in the trash at work. As a lifelong dumpster-driver I grabbed it and started using it. Now I am addicted to it. I want to get something similar for my home PC but that has more of a gaming aspect to it.

I'm no keyboard connoisseur but perhaps you guys can help me out.

General Requirements:

Primary Uses (in order):
  • Programming (60%)
  • Gaming (Some FPS but mostly games like Civilization V, etc) (40%)

What I liked about the G15 and would be looking for in another KB
  • Backlit keys
  • LCD Display - this was nice b/c I used the built-in clock & count down timer to stay out of trouble with my wife while gaming. I also played around with LCD Studio and put together some nice monitoring displays.
  • USB hub built in (not a must)

More "nice-to-haves"
  • Mechanical Keys similar to the IBM keyboard
  • Modability/Customizable keys (as in being able to buy different color keys and/or symbols on the keys)
  • Can register multiple key-presses (N-Key Rollover?)
  • Robustness (the G15 is not the most sturdily built KB whereas I could probably use the IBM KB for home defense if I needed to)

I had a friend with basically the same want list coming from the same G15. There is a lot of conflicting wants in there, mainly with backlit + customization. It is one or the other for the most part. Custom backlight keys don't really exist. You can use standard keys and not necessarily be able to see the led under however.
LCD screen does not exist on mechanical keyboard. If you really need one grab a standalone from matrix orbital or similar.
To be brief I recommended Ducky Shine, but he got a Black Widow Ultimate instead. I guess they are happy with it so thats fine, as it did tick that usb / audio hub box...

Thanks lysol. I will look into the Ducky Shine. The black widow's lettering fonts look a little extreme for my taste. I don't mind trying to put together an external lcd panel. It would be a good project :)

I don't think there's no mechanical with a LCD display. But for backlit, I would say Ducky Shine like other people. And Black Widow Ultimate if you want the cheaper option that has USB/audio jack.

for everything in the "nice-to-have" section, it's pretty much covered by mechanical keyboards with Cherry MX switchs, since you'll be able to find tons of keycaps for it. The question you may want to ask is which switch to choose, since the BWU is limited to blue switches.

I used to use a G15, but it got replaced with a Filco Majestouch 2.
