Gender shouldn't be an issue on male-dominated Internet forums, but it is.  If I was female I would probably keep it to myself.  I'm glad there are at least some women who are willing to deal with the crap and maintain an open presence here.

It's better here than on teamiquid.net, at least.

This is one weird thread, and sounds pretty much like a chat room at this point. Are there still chat rooms, or did they fade away with the 90's?

IRC still exists.  And omegle.com.  They have a feature where you can type in a question and watch strangers discuss it.  I just typed one in:

Question to discuss:
Do you like pancakes?
Stranger 1: No.

:whoo:

I remember logging into AOL via DOS using Geoworks, and being able to list all available chat rooms, like 20 of them, and thinking it was amazing.  Prior to this I had only logged into local BBS's that only had capability to chat live with the Sysop.  My dad told me to tell everyone I was a boy - so 11/f me told everyone I was 14/m.  Unfortunately, this didn't protect me as planned, as I started receiving files via Fidonet, some pre-internet email network, with attachments having names like 21horse.jpg.  I will leave the content of 21horse.jpg to your imagination.

It's a keyboard forum - it can't be THAT bad.. right?  But, then again, I'm an engineer and I've learned that working with 90% men is not bad as long as I work very hard and never ask questions.

In gaming, though, I definitely do not immediately disclose my gender, and I play as a male character on an MMO.  With the headsets, it takes harassment to another level.  Even with all men, people hiding behind a computer are generally terrible towards each other..

On the internet, nobody knows you are a dog.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

You tell me.  What I've observed is that any time the question of women on geekhack comes up, ripster immediately posts five or ten pictures of borderline porn, and one or two others make kitchen jokes.

Yup.  On TL.net threads that have anything to do with women get flooded with fap comments.  At least the mods there are aggressive with the banhammer.

I think so many women work full time now that the kitchen jokes invoke an eye roll response.  I would love to get into the kitchen and make you all sandwiches, but unfortunately I have to work 12 hours/day instead.  Ugh, now I want a sandwich.

if I were female (I am not) I do not think that I would want to admit that simple fact in a forum, like this, of pathetic drooling dweebs who would immediately put up photos and comments demonstrating their woeful pathetic-ness.

Get Lives.

Even though your fingers are on your keyboard more than any other object on any given day.

Not really sure why they would be offended, they could make an opposite thread mentioning men and then post racy pictures of modest guys.

Besides, people were disappointed in the thread. A little conflict makes for a good read!
