Which keyboard gives more street cred?
« on: Fri, 20 January 2012, 07:15:02 »
By end of this month I will order a new keyboard that will be used for gaming and typing, I just have a problem deciding which.

Topre because I heard its like typing on boobies.

Truly Ergonomic because of the design.

KBT racer 75% because of the small size and cool backlightning.

I had the Realforce but return it after 2 days because I thought it sucked for typing, because there is almost no tactile feedback and no click, the keys felt mushy too, it felt like a rubber dome. And typing speed on it was bad too.

Definately, if you feel like you need feedback on your keyboard, Topre's the wrong choice. It's smooth and mushy (In the good boobies way as you put it, but still mushy for those who prefer a nice hard sharp feeling) and very quiet. But if you don't need feedback while typing, it's great. Compared to Browns and Blue's I've tried, I love typing and gaming on it more and do it faster too.

Of course, if you get the Racer 75% you'll get just as much street cred as the others but you'll save like $200.

Deciding on a keyboard based on "street cred" ?

Don't see anything in the Ripster knowledge base about "street cred". Maybe he will have to include one...

I don't have one but I think HHKB is up there because of small size and high price. Also IBM Model M Industrial Spacesaver becuase how rare it is....

Street cred?  Obviously you need to get a Phantom.  You can't get any more hardcore than a Phantom outside of South Korea.  Add a set of Cherry double shot or even dye sub keycaps, you are at gangsta level of cred.

So then obviously what you need to do is go to South Korea and get the custom keyboards that are even more hardcore than a Phatnom.

You don't have to go to South Korea to get one of those if you know people.  Kingpins have both Phantom and Korean custom imports.

I would say a beam spring board or Model F.  =D
After that maybe SSK's and Industrials.

On your list though of the three you mentioned I would go with Topre.

Since street cred probably means uber Geek cred on a Geek forum then I would go with a Datahand or absolutely anything you actualy customize.

=)

Ummm... You're jokin' right OP?  Mate, no offence but who cares what other people think!?

Seriously, if your choice of 'board is based on "street cred" then you've completely missed the point.  How about asking yourself which board you enjoyed using most and stick with that one... Be it Steelseries, Filco, Ducky, Cm's, Topre or even Logitech. Who gives a rat's titties!

And for the guys here who have been egging him on with gun tottin' keyboards (amusing as it is)... stop teasin' the man.

Topre 55g is not mushy at all.  Great pop and tactility.  For whatever reason, though, the Topre 55g held my typing speed back.  I've typed on all kinds of RD and mech keyboards and use a model M most of the time at work.  There was just something about Topre 55g keeping my speed down.  I liked a lot of things about the Topre though, so I'm going to try a variable.

Oh, and I know it's not on the OP's list, but you probably get the most "street cred" from a model M, maybe one of the 122 key terminal varieties.  :)  I've had various boards and keycaps at my desk at work, but the model M is the one that gets all the questions (whether praise from older folks or heckles from young'uns who think I should replace it with something 'good' like a Logitech so that I can have media controls).

There's something to keep in mind before insisting on NKRO.  It's worth noting that even a board rated 2KRO is guaranteed a minimum of 2 simultaneous presses no matter what the combination.  Depending on the combination it could be more than 2.  For instance, both my model M and a Logitech Illuminated I had were both rated 2KRO.  The Logi had a really stupid design and couldn't even do SHIFT+W+SPACE (jump while running in most FPS games).  The model M has no such problem even though it's rated 2KRO and SHIFT+W+SPACE is 3 keys.

I'm sure someone, somwhere has posted all the details of Model M KRO somewhere.  It wouldn't shock me if it was ripster.

Yeah I don't understand how some here find Topre switches mushy.  They feel very different than Cherry switches, but they bottom out firmly and pop back up satisfyingly.

I laugh at the people who laugh at you; because they are know-nothing pinheads.  There are two kinds of people in this world:  those that laugh, and those that laugh at those that laugh.

Now to answer your original query, Ima give it to you straight kid:  I grew up on the mean streets of New York City, and I can tell you this about street cred:  it can never be bought, it must be earned.   To get street cred with a keyboard, then you must acquire that to which others can only aspire.  This will of course entail no small effort on your part.  So, make your own keebo, or make a kewl mod out of an existing one, or better yet get a keyboard from NORTH Korea.  That will show those nattering nabobs of nincompoopery.

Learn to type in just zeros and ones and you'll drive the ladies crazy, (the cosplay ones I believe j/k)

Honestly though, if you ever get an IBM Model M Spacesaver, one of the industrial ones in olive. That's pretty bad ass in my book.

BTW, someone please PM me if you ever have one of these for sale....

I'll admit I did not read the whole thread, but why based your choice on street cred? Does what others think matter so much? I tend to buy or use the keyboard that feels best for me. One my favourite keyboards is the G80-3000. It's hardly the best looking keyboard out there, but I don't care for it a great keyboard to type on.

On the other hand, the Apple Bluetooth keyboard may have a great look to some, but it is an awful keyboard to type on.

Now, if you want something very portable, then I agree the HHKB or any mini keyboard is the way to go.

Just my thoughts.

orly?  It was a cry for help and I missed it.  Now I feel bad.  So here's my advice:  buy all 3.  Get the Topre, the Race 75%, and the Truly Ergonomic.  Actually I don't own any ergonomic keyboards, so I can't really recommend that one, but if you have any pain in ur hands or wrists then u should definitely get taht one first.

Maybe we are talking the OP's words too literally, but that's his fault, isn't it? Written words don't carry tone or body language. This is why I try to be as charitable as possible, but sometimes I do fail to spot the "sense of humour."
