Filco Majestouch 2 - Palm Rest needed?
« on: Tue, 24 January 2012, 03:05:52 »
hey guys,
im thinking about getting a Filco Majestouch 2, but im not sure if I need a palm rest for this. I want to know this beforehand, because the keyboard is already expensive enough. usually i rest my palm on the table while typing, but the Filco looks kinda high.
Note: at the moment im typing on a Black Widow and i can reach the numberkeys on top pretty easily on the keyboard, while i always hit the spacebar when i type on a 6gv2.

So is the height at the front of the Filco the same as the 6gv2? maybe somebody knows the measure at the front?

The height is 1.5cm or so. I use a DIY palm rest made by a stack of paper with the Filco MJ2.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black

I think the height difference isn't so much the issue. With the Razer Blackwidow you have a slanted shape front edge -- pretty much looks like a semi-palm rest. With keyboards like the Filco you are faced with something like a box square edge. I don't really know why they designed it that way. Probably for future purposes of adding a separate palm rest like steelseries did with the 7g? I dunno for sure. I am typing right now on the quickfire which I think is similarly shaped. I also have a razer blackwidow. I honestly don't feel much drastic difference. I hope I use the correct words but I do feel sometimes that my palms and thumbs are just "hovering" above the keyboard and that is tiring but then not so much.

:D If you're tight on budget just improvise. Use a book or something and DIY a palm rest. I personally just fold a handkerchief and rest my wrists on that while I work. It is a bad example I know, but it works for me.

I use one, but I do with pretty much any keyboard.  It's just my style and is probably just a personal preference rather than a rule based on the case style.

I use that for my Filcos. Perfect. I enjoy the extra room for my hands to rest. I also use it for my Unicomp. :pop2:

I use a CM quickfire (pretty much idebtical to filco build) as my main board and in the beggining it definitely felt too high and uncomfortable. I thought I was screwed into buying a palm rest after just spending so much on a keyboard. But after a week or so of use I completely forgot about it. A palm rest would probably annoy me more tthen anything now, and I'm at my desk 8 hours a day.

Its all personal preference!

I don't really know why they designed it that way.

They designed it that way so they could sell you a strip of bonded "leather" that says FILCO on it for another $60 later on.

Thank you for the answers :).
it looks like there is no way around a wrist rest for the Filco... at least for most people. Now I don't know if I should buy one or look for another Keyboard ;(.
anyone knows a Mechanical Keyboard with Cherry-Mx Browns/Blues which doesn't need a wrist rest?
By the way, I hate Macrokeys, thats why I won't go with the Razer Black Widow.

Have you considered a WASD keyboard? You can add a wrist rest for ~$8. Although the wrist rest I posted only cost me like ~$7.

I'm really not sure of the height differences between the mechanical keyboards and the keyboards you've been using. Nor am I'm all that familiar with height differences between different brands of mechanical keyboards.

The problem about WASD-Keyboards is the lack of regional Layouts (even in the Custom-Designer there is no way to change the Enter-Key for exmaple). Currently im kinda interested into the Zowie Celeritas or maybe the Das Keyboard. It doesnt look as high as a Filco
