IBM Model F AT
« on: Tue, 31 January 2012, 15:55:19 »
I recently got a used IBM Model F AT in quite good shape.  It really is incredibly responsive.  The SysReq key, probably not much used, especially feels amazing, but even the well used home keys are more responsive than the keys of the Model M I bought NIB.

All that said, it is really loud, even compared to the M.  And I'm wondering if the M, which still has an excellent, if humbler, implementation of those world beating buckling springs is a better compromise...

I'm not sure I can understand the question.

I use the numpad, arrow keys, home cluster, etc, so I really like a full-size, conventional layout.

But the Model F does have a distinct feel and sound that nothing, not even the Model M, can compare to.

Flossing the springs is the easiest and cheapest way to quieten it down, and is easily reversible.
“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

I feel your ping.

Buckling Spring (especially capacitive) ping is the music for my ears.
I like slightly heavier feel of Model M more than Model F though.
