I want tan doubleshots on my Filco...
« on: Mon, 06 February 2012, 20:22:18 »
Just like this:

How do I go about getting a set of those w/o having to use a group buy that takes months and months (if you can made sense of any of it)?

I see there are several G80-1800 Cherry keyboards on ebay that looks like most of the caps will fit? Is there another board that will work for the rest? How do I tell which boards have doubleshots from the part number? Is it the ones that have 'H' after 1800 for example?

Thanks!

The tan ones from Cherry are rare. As for the rest of the caps - you won't be able to find original Cherry ones. You will need to supplement with a Moogle Kit from Group Buy 4. Also to get most of the keycaps to fit you'd want ANSI layout rather than the ISO layout board you have pictured there.

Only the cool kids don't use moogle kits and only 100% cherry doubleshots.

So this one would work for some....

But I would need caps lock, whole bottom row including spacebar (maybe) and right shift? Plus + key on tenkey portion (will be using for tenkeyless but nice to have that option I guess)

Yea...you could get the replacement caps you need from a moogle kit in group buy 4 (or maybe you could post a WTB in the classifieds).

There were a bunch of extra white/beige Cherry sets available on Deskthority from Ascaii, but I imagine they're all sold by now.  I've been on geekhack less than a year, though, and have participated in two group buys for white Cherries.  You just have to keep your eyes open.  And I'll probably be starting another group buy for moogle kits in a couple of weeks (separate from Round 4).

Well... you can get a complete Cherry set, all doubleshot except the win and menu keys, and even with a centered caps lock. BUT it will cost you a lot (average is $100-130 for one of these boards), and you will have to spend much time finding it, as the MX8000H**** series ANSI enter boards are difficult in black, let alone in white...
If you can live without a real Cherry centered caps it makes life a lot simpler, as you can find white G80-3000HPBUS much easier, but still at LEAST as expensive typically.
