Really confused, need some help
« on: Wed, 08 February 2012, 15:29:00 »
I've read the big guide but I still can't figure out what type of keyboard/switch I want to get. Read something about gaming keyboards in a thread too but I just can't decide because I play different games each time.
Now, some info about me:

Use my computer for gaming/doing school stuff/making beats (doubt that changes anything in the type of keyboard I need).
I mainly play things like Battlefield 3, League of Legends and I might just start to play some Starcraft 2, haven't bought that yet.
Not sure if I want a keyboard that makes a lot of noise, currently I've got a standard Acer keyboard and it doesn't make a lot of noise but I haven't had any experience with 'noisy' keyboard so far, so I might like those, not sure.
Would be cool if the keyboard has some media keys (just mainly things like play/pause and volume) but not really required.
Preferably somewhere under/around €100, I'm not that rich ^^

I hope that's enough to at least recommend me the type of switch I should be looking for and maybe even a keyboard. If you need more info, please feel free to ask me in the thread. Looking forward to be part of the club :)

1) you need to determine what you do the most on the PC. Then decide whether you want to have fun typing, flying over the keys, or just need fast double-taps.

2) Do you have option to try different switches at local shop?

3) €100 is a lot of money

Go ahead and buy something in the classified section ! You can try and see what you like. I started here by buying a used MX-switch tenkeyless keyboard (Noppoo) for 100$CAN.

Welcome to Geekhack and like Mazora said, have a look in Classifieds.  I think I saw a Leopold browns in there.

I'd recommend cherry browns (Great for if LoL/Typing are things you do often), but you really need to try out the switches for yourself.

That chart is oh so deeply flawed and misleading. Yet another reason why ripster is not #1.

General Questions

1) What is your budget?
Under or around €100

2) Where (country) will you be buying this keyboard and keyboard language layout?
The Netherlands, QWERTY (?)

3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you don’t really like?
a.Like: Don't know.
b.Dislike: Don't know.

4) Would you consider keyboards that are used?
Probably would like a new one...

5) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this keyboard?
Gaming and doing stuff for school

6) Will you be playing games on your keyboard? What type of games?
Yes, Battlefield 3, League of Legends, maybe some SC2 and some other random games.

7) Would you prefer to see the keyboard you’re considering before purchasing it or buying a keyboard online without seeing it is OK?
I could buy it online but it would be cool if I could look around in a shop near me to actually test out how it feels.

8) Will the keyboard be used for Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...?
Windows 7

9) What other keyboard(s) have you used before and why are you not using it/them anymore?
Just the ones that come with the computer. Acer one right now. Don't want them cause I think a mechanical one would feel a lot better.

Build Quality and Design

10) What size keyboard would you prefer?
a.Full-Size (with number pad) <<<----- Not sure why I wouldn't actually want to have numbers?
b.Ten-Keyless (without number pad)
c.Don’t Care

11) Are the keyboard’s looks and stylishness important to you? If so, describe any physical features such as color, material appearance, etc...
Not really, but I want it to last. I can type without looking so it's not that big of a deal how it looks like.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, I wouldn't actually want it to look like the 'regular' keyboards but I'll settle for those if I can't get any other ones.

12) When are you buying the keyboard?
Sometime soon, I've got the money.

13) How long do you want this keyboard to last?
Long enough for it to be worth my money.

Switch Questions

14) What key sound do you want?
a.Quiet
b.Medium
c.Loud
d.Don’t Care <<<-------- I'm not sure yet even, because my current one doesn't really make a lot of noise (quiet-medium). Wouldn't want it to get really loud though because I like to game at night sometimes.

15) Do you want tactile feel?
a.Yes
b.No
c.Don’t Care <<<-------- Once again, not sure. Haven't actually had a feel what the differences are, because I've only used the 'standard' keyboards.

16) Do you want clickiness?
a.Yes
b.No
c.Don’t Care <<<-------- Again, never tested them. Wouldn't want too much noise because of late night gaming, but I'm open to test out keyboards that have a click/no click and more/less sound. Might be cool.

17) How strong are your fingers?
a. Very Weak
b. Weak
c. Medium
d. Strong
e. Very strong <<<-------- I AM THE HULK. I usually don't lift my hands off the keyboard a lot when I type so I'm not sure if it would be useful for me to have a keyboard that I have to push down really hard on.
f. Doesn't matter

Keyboard Components

18) PS/2 or USB
USB

19) Media keys? Macro Keys? Backlight? USB Hub?
A play/pause and volume key/button might be useful, but not REALLY necessary. Probably don't need macro keys for the games I play. Backlight might be cool, but once again no real need for it. No need for a USB hub.

Hope that helps you guys, feel free to suggest multiple keyboards or whatever.

Still not really sure on what to get right now. What I've read is that you have to press pretty hard on the Black Cherries? Not sure if I'd want that though because it might just become tiresome after hours of typing and gaming...

Could you maybe recommend some Black, Blue and Brown keyboards to me?
