Modern equivalent of NMB RT2358TW?
« on: Sun, 12 February 2012, 14:36:40 »
Hello all. Newb here.

For hygiene reasons, I need to replace my old NMB RT2358TW. I've been using it for some time - it even says it's Windows NT certified :) I went to my local big-box electronics stores and tried out their keyboards, and hated all of them. Cheap, flimsy junk with no tactile feedback.

So I started looking around the 'net, and discovered mechanical keyboards and geekhack. But ... I don't think my NMB is a mechanical keyboard! It's heavy, sturdy, has good feedback, but it's fairly quiet and I think perhaps it uses rubber dome switches.

What would be the modern day equivalent? Is there a mechanical kb with the same feel, that is still quiet? All the noise from my NMB seems to emanate from the first touch - perhaps the key cap hitting the switch? I really have no idea, but if I leave my finger on a key, and press it without taking it off, there is no sound. It does feel like there is a tactile 'bump' half way down. Are there high-quality quiet modern rubber dome keyboards with good tactile feel?

As far as I know, there aren't any local retailers who have high end keyboards on display, so I'll likely have to get one without trying. NCIX is the best store around here (I am in Vancouver, B.C.), but they don't have much out on display.

Dell Quietkey might fit the bill.
