Want: Filco standalone numpad; Hate: 00 key
« on: Sat, 18 February 2012, 22:01:06 »
Are there any awesome standalone numpads out there same as the Filco layout but with a double width 0 instead of a silly 00?

I use my thumb to SLAP the 0 on the numpad and the spacebar, my thumb's too fat to tap that tiny little key.

Or if I'm better off sawing one of my Model M's numpads off and using that?

Which I guess I wouldn't mind doing if I had the time...

Filco I speak of: http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_images/filco_keypad_large.jpg

(...I love you.)

The only other standalone that I am familiar with is the Goldtouch and that one, too, has the 0 and 00 combination. You could always rekey the 00 to also do the 0 and then put on a double-wide key.

Alright, did some follow-up for you:

The Adesso 22key (AKP-220) has Blue Switches and is $28 from AntOnline on Amazon:

The iOne Scorpious 32key also has Blue Switches, but with a much different layout, and is for $45 from iOne's Amazon store:

Whoa baby.

When I said I love you, above, I was talking to you RColinTaylor and it's because of this:

http://www.amazon.com/Scorpius-32-mechanical-keyswitch-keypad/dp/B000UKYSFI/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329625440&sr=8-1-spell

All these blues and browns and blahs have warped my brains.

I have no clue about them really, I can read the specs and all, but it's like that episode of the Simpsons where Homer stumbles into a 3D world and he's like, "WTF0rz."

Since I've never felt them, I don't have an opinion of them.

Must sound weird, someone owning dozens of Model M's but has never touched a cherryswitch.

But it looks like if I want to do this, I have to go with Blues.

From what people have told me, because I have not used a BS, the Buckle Springs and Cherry Blues are the closest cousins. Blues are, undeniably, louder than other MX switches but have a nice feel to them. And, you are welcome.

Kinesis sells a keypad with a double width zero. It uses MX brown switches.
Filco MJ2 tenkeyless (blues)

you could always turn the 00 into a dead switch and buy, or modify, a double wide keycap if you hate the 00 but love the filco.

Whats the point of 00 on a keyboard anywho? Coding purposes or what have you? Because I for one would rather just slap the doublewide 0 key in rapid succession. :P

I'm a programmer myself, I've never encountered a situation where "00" would help me.

I think the double width keys always use a stabilizer of some sort like a bar, I like the look of that iOne with the extra keys, even though my SSK + that wouldn't be much of a savings in space, it overall will be handy for me.

I love my SSK, but not having a good numpad kills me sometimes.

I use a laptop always, when I'm at home in the US, I use a full-size model M. But abroad or working on a 1-3 week job, I might just bring my laptop, but it would be really nice to have a numpad that doesn't have a "00" whereever I go.

Yes it's for accounting/currency and it's a lovely button for those applications.  A standard button on adding machines.

For coding, I never use the numpad. I only bought the Filco for recording in Pro Tools (which uses the numpad extensively). So it's never really been a problem
