Blacks/Browns/Reds for gaming?
« on: Sun, 19 February 2012, 23:32:31 »
Hey everyone, thanks for reading first of all. So i need help deciding on what switches i should go with for gaming, currently im using a terrible wireless keyboard (Logitech ex110 to be exact). I had the chance to type on browns at a friend's for a little bit, and i really like the feel, but i tend to bottom out alot, not sure if this would create a problem using them. I play Tribes/Tf2, competitively alot, and am kind of loss on which switch i should aim for, as i never had the chance to type on blacks and reds. Any suggestions? I really want to order a mechanical keyboard soon, I apologize for asking something that may have been asked quite alot. Also is WASDkeyboards, a great site to order a keyboard off of? Or should i rather go with something like Rosewill?

If you bottom out on browns a lot, go with blacks. Don't do reds because they might be too light for you. I heard blacks are pretty good for FPS games. I would recommend Rosewill because they are on sale right now for $80 and comes with a free usb hub. Also heard they were really good quality because they are re-branded Filcos.

People around here really like WASD, so I'd recommend you go with them (keep in mind I've not used one myself). It depends on shipping costs and your location as to whether this is cheaper than a Rosewill/Leopold/Filco, and there's the added benefit of being able to personalise your keycaps.

I really recommend you try a board with Reds before committing to buying one or the other. If you liked the tactility on the Browns you tried, I'd probably stick with them. If it was me, I'd prefer to go with something I know I like, rather than take a gamble on something I haven't tried (i.e. Reds in your case). Personally I can't comment on Blacks, having never tried them. If you liked the feel of Browns, the Reds are similar (in terms of effort to press), so I'd probably keep the decision between those two so as not to complicate things.

I don't see what you mean by bottoming out "creating a problem". Care to explain a bit further? Is it the noise you're worried about?

The only thing that bothers me about rosewill, is that i hear since there laser-printed the keycaps tend to "wear off" in just a few weeks time. Which makes me wonder if it's better to just go with wasd.

I think i'm going to go with Browns, as i know them more then reds/blacks. Anyone have anything to say before i buy one? And i will eventually get another one with a different switch, so what's usually the norm for someone to go to after browns? If there is a norm anyway.

There is no normal way to buy any kind of switch mechanical keyboard to start with.
There is no the best fps gaming switch.
I have friends using black, brown and blue playing the same game I play.
You have to try yourself, it's all personal.

I'm a gamer, using MX red, playing MW3, BF3. I bottom out alot. it's not a problem.
Unless you hate the noise or the impact of the finger tip. You can put o-rings in keycaps.
So don't worry about it. You will amuse how fast the keypress response compares to rubber dome keyboard.
And it helps us alot in games

you'll only know after you have tried. I was lucky enough to be able to try the blacks at a store before I decided to purchase. Even then I wasn't totally sure. But now I like it just as much as I liked brown when I first started mech boards.

You can learn not to bottom out as much.  If you do, you will be faster.  That's a guarantee.  With Red switches, you can press lighter than Browns to actuate the key which can allow you to be faster, if you teach yourself not to bottom out.  However, like was said above, bottoming out is not such a big deal.  You obviously have been bottoming out on a rubberdome since that's the only way to actuate those keys.  Some people prefer Browns, and that's totally fine.  I liked them until I switched to Reds.  Browns have their own advantages that make them better for some people (or some genres for some people).  I personally would never recommend Blacks.  Some people like them but most people don't.  They are very stiff.
