To the owners of the mighty Ergo Clear Mod

Hi,

i currently have a g80-3000LQC with clear mx, and i'm planning to get a g80-3000LSC with blue mx to mod the clears into ergo-clears.

What am i thinking is.. it's really noticeable the difference between the two? If you owned/tried both, can you tell me some impressions?

And about the noise (i will use it at work), the ergo-clear sound it's more versur clear than versus blue right?

Sorry for this anxious questions, but it's only my third keyboard (you know, the geekhack syndrome..) :tongue:

Hi there!

The thing about noise with ergo-clears and all switches is bottoming out. If you can train yourself not to bottom out on every keypress, the ergo clears are VERY quiet. I use an EC modded g80-1800 at work. Bottoming out the switches will still give you the distinctive noise making it louder then a RD board.

As for feel, I much prefer Ergo-clears over clears due to the lower force and high tactility. I like the VERY noticeable bump, combined with not tiring the fingers out. Clears just didnt work for me.

I found the ergo clear switch noisier over the regular clear. When releasing the switch it produces a clicking noise due to the sticking.
Imo the mx blues switch is more pleasant switch overall.

Interestingly, I have not run into the sticking at all. I used near new clear stems and new brown springs for my ergos. I think sticking is related more to used, worn down clear stems, though I still harbor the suspicion that blue springs might also be marginally different from brown springs and cause the issue.

I sort of agree with RiGS - IMO the blue is a smoother albeit clickier alternative to ergo clears. Personally I love both.

i personally love blues (i have a qpad mk-50 blue), but at work i can't do too much noise; the clears i'm actualling using are too stiffy for me, so i thought that ergo-clears is a good way to go.

I can get away with the blue Cherry at work, but not with the Model M.

Man, I wish it didn't take so much effort to convert a board to Ergo Clears.  I mentioned this on a couple other threads, but I was thinking about modding a Filco w/ Browns to Ergo Clears until I heard that people had problems with them not bouncing up fast enough.  My wife and I type 60-80 WPM sometimes, so I don't want there to be any delay there.  So, I feel like, in order to not have to do all the work of messing with the switches, I should just stick with Browns or reg. Clears....

There is always a risk indeed. I tried a mod only once, and I think it's safe to say that I will never ever attempt a mod again. It was with my Customizer 104 with the grease mod.

I've generally truly enjoyed the modding process myself, and rather like my weird variable force mod (which is fun if you have the parts... for details of the first one, see link in my sig). I'm actually about to do my 3rd keyboard that way, the Ricercar SPOS I just purchased. That said, I do really like the ergo clears in general. I just prefer a heavier switch, although my pinkies don't, which is why I concocted my mod.

Although it is time consuming, I don't really find modding that difficult, but your mileage may vary. Good luck in any case!

i never did a mod, but i think that on PCB it's a work more longer than hard; i've only saw some videos and lurked a bit :)

in the meantime i bought that g80-3000 with blues! it's in shipping now

thats the reason I converted my poker over from blues to ergo clears. I could probably 'get away with' using blues, but I don't want to be a ****. Most people here are too nice to complain, so I swapped em out before that became an issue.
