My first mechanical keyboard!!!
« on: Wed, 22 February 2012, 14:07:07 »
Hi,
Firstly, my first post here so hello!

I always liked noisy clicking keyboards but had never owned one until a few weeks ago.   A relative of mine passed away and this keyboard which I always liked has been given to me.
It was in a bit of a state before I plucked the keys out and gave it a good old clean but it's scrubbed up well.  I'm very happy with it and just thought I'd share a picture or two here.

It has blue switched and I believe from looking at the Cherry database here that it's a 1994 model of the G80-3000HFMGB.  Only slight problem was that it had an old AT connecter but I managed to find an adapter without much trouble on ebay.  I absolutely adore the sound and I'm now a mechanical keyboard convert so I'll be rummaging around the boot sales in the summer looking for boards like the Model M.

Will post a couple more pictures in the next post as only one URL per post seems to be allowed for now.

Posted reply to you REVENGE but waiting for a mod to approve it :)  Cannot post anymore until they do so.

Congratulations, that is quite a fantastic first board to get! All the more meaningful that it came from a relative, I would hang onto it and keep it in good condition! These guys can yellow quite a bit with UV exposure, retr0bright might be a good idea for restoration if needed. UV protectants would also help. You can also re-wind the cord if desired using a rod of appropriate diameter and some carefully applied heat.

Thanks REVENGE.  I'm really happy with the keyboard and I'll never part from it, not to say I won't buy more mechanical boards!

There is some yellowing on the casing and I'd never heard of retr0bright before.  I've had a look at the formula and already have a couple of the ingredients so will try and find the rest soon and mix up a batch.

I think the cord is OK; i just pulled out the coiled part for the picture but that's normally hidden underneath my desk.

Here's a couple more pictures that I took but couldn't post before:

Thanks REVENGE.  I'm really happy with the keyboard and I'll never part from it; it has great sentimental value.  Not to say I won't buy more mechanical boards now!

This is the sticker on the back.  If there's anything else interesting that can be gleaned from the information given, it would be nice to know.

+1 on a great inheritance!

Before you Retrobrite that keyboard, post a few more pics.  It looks really good the way it is, so I don't think you need to expose yourself to noxious chemical fumes just yet.  Just use it and enjoy!

Thanks :)  They keys are like new now after a good scrubbing with flash wipes and dettox.  The casing is a little discoloured but it's not really that noticeable but it would be nice to get it a little brighter.  It's not annoying me though.

Will post a couple of pics next chance I get in daylight.

Here's the third and final pic that I took yesterday of the switch:

Yeah, fumes are dangerous.  The main ingredient in most Retrobrite recipes is Hydrogen Peroxide.  Here is what the internet has to say about hydrogen peroxide:

High-concentration hydrogen peroxide streams, typically above 40%, should be considered a D001 hazardous waste, due to concentrated hydrogen peroxide's meeting the definition of a DOT oxidizer, if released into the environment. The EPA Reportable Quantity (RQ) for D001 hazardous wastes is 100 pounds, or approximately ten gallons, of concentrated hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area and away from any flammable or combustible substances.[35] It should be stored in a container composed of non-reactive materials such as stainless steel or glass (other materials including some plastics and aluminium alloys may also be suitable).[36] Because it breaks down quickly when exposed to light, it should be stored in an opaque container, and pharmaceutical formulations typically come in brown bottles that filter out light.

Hydrogen peroxide, either in pure or diluted form, can pose several risks:

Explosive vapors. Above roughly 70% concentrations, hydrogen peroxide can give off vapor that can detonate above 70 °C (158 °F) at normal atmospheric pressure. This can then cause a boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE) of the remaining liquid. Distillation of hydrogen peroxide at normal pressures is thus highly dangerous.
Hazardous reactions. Hydrogen peroxide vapors can form sensitive contact explosives with hydrocarbons such as greases. Hazardous reactions ranging from ignition to explosion have been reported with alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids (particularly acetic acid), amines and phosphorus. listed below are the hazardous affects of H202: Potential Health Effects
----------------------------------

Inhalation:
Vapors are corrosive and irritating to the respiratory tract. Inhalation of mist may burn the mucous membrane of the nose and throat. In severe cases, exposures may result in pulmonary edema and death.
Ingestion:
Corrosive and irritating to the mouth, throat, and abdomen. Large doses may cause symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea as well as blistering or tissue destruction. Stomach distention (due to rapid liberation of oxygen), and risk of stomach perforation, convulsions, pulmonary edema, coma, possible cerebral edema (fluid on the brain), and death are possible.
Skin Contact:
Corrosive. Symptoms of redness, pain, and severe burn can occur.
Eye Contact:
Vapors are very corrosive and irritating to the eyes. Symptoms include pain, redness and blurred vision. Splashes can cause permanent tissue destruction.
Chronic Exposure:
No information found.
Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:
Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems or impaired respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.

Thanks :)  The keys look as new after a bit of scrubbing using flash wipes and dettox; they were more dirty than discoloured.  The casing is only slightly discoloured; it would be nice to have it a little brighter but it's not really bothering me too much.  I may give it a better clean with milder cleaners before thinking about using retr0brite.

Will take some more pics in daylight when I get the chance.

This was the final pic I took yesterday of one of the switches:

Pics in daylight which I finally got round to taking today.

Not really that much staining.  Might just leave it as it is.
