Problem with Noppoo Choc Mini - spacebar double registers
« on: Thu, 23 February 2012, 02:00:40 »
So I've been running into this problem lately (and  you might notice  it being peppered  all across this post). Whenever I am typing, hitting spacebar after another key sometimes triggers the space to register twice. A bit of testing shows that the space bar has to be pressed after the letter key rather quickly. I have tried changing the repeat delay (how long you hold a key down for until windows starts repeating it for you) and making it slower seemed to exacerbate the problem. The probability of double registering on the space bar increases the faster the space bar is pressed after a key. If I wait for a while after type out a word before hitting the space bar, the  problem is reduced but it seriously gets in the way of my typing.

I'm wondering if this is a symptom of taking the made in china risk, or because noppoo presents itself as multiple USB devices, or if I have broken the keyboard somehow, or if this is a problem that other owners are aware of.

It sounds like key chatter to me. I had that problem (also on the spacebar) but I cannot remember what 'board but I have never owned a Noppoo choc mini so I know it's not that.

Indeed that sounds a lot like it, but the problem is the double space register only appears if I hit the space bar in quick succession after another key press. I have tried just repeatedly poking the space bar and I don't think it double registers at all. If I artificially wait a bit after the end of each word before pressing space, then there is almost no double register.

I thought it would be from the way the noppoo presents itself as mutliple USB devices, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, I just noticed - I purposely left one in and it disappeared.

I mashed my spacebar with an extra bit of force and it seems to have fixed the problem. Broken switch? Crumbs in the switch?

I just wanted to follow up with the issue. Today I took the spacebar off and vacuumed around the area. I also depressed the switch and using a small rubber pump, blew air around the innards with a vacuum cleaver held close to catch any debris.

Problem seems to have disappeared.

Thanks for the hints and troubleshooting, ripster and fossala.

I think this thread has helped me narrow down a problem that I was having.
I have this wireless keyboard/trackpad combo, which is really handy for using on the sofa with my pc connected to the TV.
It is very old and worn (scissor switches) and it has started double registering some keystrokes.
I was going to toss it, but then I had the idea of using the controller in a mechanical keyboard by rewiring the matrix (which I will have to do by hand, with wires...)
I was concerned that the double registers might be something to do with the controller or the receiver, but suspected (hoped!) that the worn keys/membrane was the more likely cause.

After reading this post, I am confident enough that it's most likely not the electronics that I'm going to begin experimenting...
