New keyboard
« on: Fri, 09 March 2012, 13:32:25 »
Hi guys!

I was looking for a good keyboard to type and play. Good as in sturdy, with a good feel typing and not over the top as is the norm nowadays.
Searching for options I came here, with a few questions.

I read and was told that the best keyboards were mechanicals. I couldn't comprehend why people would pay so much for a keyboard, until I tried one myself. Simply amazing.
The problem is, I'm from Portugal, and there are few mechanicals sold there, mainly steelseries and the black widow. I tried the black widow but didn't like it much because of the low feedback while typing.

So, could you recommend me a mechanical that is good for both typing AND gaming, with a PT layout? If there is no PT layout, at least a mechanical that let's me switch keys, to make me able to change the layout.

Thansk in advance, and sorry if I made any typos :)

You should be able to switch keyboard layouts in Windows, or whatever OS you use.  And you could likely buy a Portuguese keycap set from somewhere.

WASDkeyboards can make them in one of those weird 105-key ISO layouts, which look like they'd do the job according to the PT layout diagrams I can find.  Try the design tool on that site; it has a ridiculous amount of customizability for each and every key on the board.  They make the keyboards with MX Black and Red type switches; I would highly recommend Reds for both gaming and typing, as they're extremely light with a great flow.  40A o-rings will make the keys feel even better.

Hi Yuusou,

You mentioned that you didn't like the low feedback in the Black Widow.  Which model did you try?  They come in either MX blue or brown.  If you didn't like the low feedback of those switches I personally wouldn't recommend MX reds mentioned above.  They are linear and have no feedback.  Here's a link to the wiki with pictures of the different switches.  When you said "low feedback" do you mean you want them to have an audible click?  If so, I would recommend you try buckling springs (Unicomp).  If you want something quieter, you could look into a board with MX clears.

They were black I think. Not a Widow maybe?
I read through the wiki already, and I think that the best switch type for me would be the brown one. Not sure though. The thing is, I want a feedback that is listenable, but not much.

Won't matter much when he starts his collectin'.  He's bound to have a Red in there somewhere, Portygee layout or not.

Oh ok, I could be wrong, too, I don't have a BlackWidow but I've tried the blue switch version in the store.  The browns kind of make a click sound, not as loud as the blues but its there.

True! I haven't tried reds yet.  So I'm red-curious.

Well, I think my only option is Amazon or something like that. What brands should I keep an eye on?

For browns, probably Filco or WASD.  I haven't tried a Filco but a lot of people here seem to like them.  Do you need backlighting?  Ducky Shining is a backlit board with browns.  Here's the full list.
